Flopper to the Celtics with the 6th Pick

You fellas obviously don't have the celtics feed. Last night the announcers were raving about him being all over the place as they came back from 30 down. He even defended Dirk some ... guarding 4 positions. He's shot 43% in 2 games and took a 0-7 donut in only 11 minutes versus Houston.

Stevens had him playing with Rondo & Bradley last night and those 3 are a handful.

He was 0-8 against Houston and 0-5 from the three point line.

I'm with you there.

Flopping aside, though, I think defense is Smart's greatest strength. I haven't watched a Celts game yet, so I have no idea how that translates to the NBA? I agree that he has to be a lock down defender, create turnovers and develop into a real asset in every phase of the game to make up for his deficiencies as a shot maker.

Nearly every player has the potential to improve their shooting stroke over time through dedication and hard work. That's especially true with a player who is good enough to make an NBA roster. But, based on Smart's performances in the first three games, one has to wonder what he was working on before the season started?

He actually, IMO, has the build to defend the one and can MAYBE defend some smaller twos, but where do you play him on offense? I'd like to have him coming off the bench in a defensive role, but that's if he decides to defend hard all the time.

In 52 minutes versus the Nets and Mavericks Smart has 17 points on 43% shooting, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and a block.

Most impressively he had ZERO turnovers and only 5 fouls in those 2 games. He hasn't missed a free throw and even in the Houston game where he was 0-7 and only played 11 minutes the Celtics were +4 when he was on the court. He's a do it all guy. A bigger version of Eric Bledsoe.

I'm not all that great at the innerwebs, but I show his fg % to be 28%

And Chandler Parsons is averaging 29 points a game if you only count the Mavs-Celtics game.
But that's not how it works.

He sucks.and he's trashy idk why some sooners are fans of his. He's a fatter ty Lawson that can't shoot

Got those stats straight from the Celts web site (see link below). He's shooting 28.6% from the field and 14.3% from behind the arc. No matter how you slice it, that's beyond awful for an NBA guard, which happens to be the point I was making.

I didn't say he was not contributing in other ways, nor did I imply that he can't improve his shooting. Smart has the tools to be a good player someday. But if he doesn't improve his shooting, it may not matter all that much.

can you cherry pick stats anymore? these games weren't even back to back.

Against Denver and Portland, in 41 min Kendrick Perkins had 21 points, 13 rebounds, zero turnovers, shot 80% fro the field and 83% from the line.

Against portland and toronto, in 64 minutes, Lance thomas had 28 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, while shooting 62% from the field.

Against brooklyn and toronto, in 62 minutes, Telfair had 27 points, 89rebounds, 9 assists, while shooting 50% from the field.

Parsons scored 5 points in his first game, then 20, 21 and 29 in his next 3. Which is the outlier? The 5 or the 29?

Same with Smart, yeah he's a rookie who had an off night and only played 11 minutes. But in his other outings his all around game is showing through. Of course the 1 game is the outlier and he will continue to improve. Very solid pick.

I know Boca likes to play the town fool, but jumping on the Smart train so early? He must really be starving for attention.

Ty Lawson with Marcus Smart's size would be an absolute monster.

That additional 30 lbs and 8.5" of wingspan make a huge difference, particularly on the defensive end. Lawson isn't a bad defender, but his size limits what he can do, whereas Smart's defense drew rave reviews in his NBA debut, in which he was asked to guard not only Deron Williams but also Joe Johnson--a 6'7", 240 lbs bull who abuses smaller and/or weaker defenders (see: Round 1 of the 2014 NBA playoffs). Ty Lawson isn't guarding NBA wings, let alone Joe Johnson.

I get the comparison, but it's hard to make due to the massive difference in size, not just in terms of weight but also in length.

Had to mention that Marcus Smart's flop was #3 on SportsCenter's Not Top 10. Hilarious.

Promise I'm not going to do this all season, but he had a pretty nice game tonight.

7 of 14, 4-8 from three, and 5-5 from the line. 23 points. 4 rebounds. 5 assists. No turnovers. And 2 steals.

Solid.

Is that a cross your heart promise? ;)

Seriously, that's a great stat line for any NBA rookie. No doubt about it, Marcus is capable of putting up good numbers when he's on his game.

Dude has skills...that's never been a question. His ability to play fundamentally sound night in and night out is the question.

He's averaging 7.4 points per game, so he's not had too many games like that one so far.

I think shooting 50% from the 3pt line will be more of an outlier than a trend for him throughout his NBA career. He has that killer confidence that will make him streaky for long range, but he showed time in and time out that his jump shot is very average.
