Former Sooner Memories: Jameel Heywood

I was in Room 311 in the Bud Wilkinson House when Jameel hit that shot to beat Missouri. When you live in athletic housing they have to have a 50/50 split of athletes and non-athletes, so you'd have a pair of athletes in one room and a pair of non-athletes in the next.

When Heywood hit that shot the non-athletes came pouring out of their rooms to celebrate. The athletes, mainly football players, were completely oblivious.

We made lots of noise that night.

Jameel Heywood will always be linked to the '01 Missouri game much in the same manner that Ernie Abercrombie will always be linked to the '95 Kansas game (though Ernie was obviously more productive overall).

As for Jameel's recruitment, Kelvin was scrambling for a low-post player after Ryan Humphrey decided to transfer out. Since OU made the Sweet 16 that year, it wasn't until April when Ryan made the decision. At that point, Kelvin could only get in on two players - Jameel and Jeremy McNeil, who wound up as a four-year role player with Syracuse.

As for Reggie Evans, I always link him to Brent Price. Had we not finished second for them out of JUCO and high school, respectively, OU would have two National Championship banners to hang in Lloyd Noble...ahh, the game of "What if?"

Heywood was a typical undersized, scrappy post player that Sampson liked to use. I've attached a link that shows the lineup and stats from that Missouri game. There was a lot of talent on that team .... I wish the Sooners had as much now.

J.R. Raymond, Hollis Price, Nolan Johnson, Jameel, Ace McGhee, Daryn Selvy, Johnnie Gilbert, Kelly Newton, and Tim Heskett. That was a pretty solid roster.

Man, if you stop and think about it, Hollis and Ace were right up there among the top OU players of all time, and a few of those other guys weren't too shabby either.

I was a big Nolan Johnson fan. When they went to the spread-it-out-let-Nolan-create offense, he couldn't be stopped. I remember at old Gallagher Iba Arena in 2000, when he took that game over late and basically won the game for us.

I'm surprised JR Raymond was on the roster for that Mizzou game, because that was the season he was dismissed from the team. It must have been just after this game or so.

J. R. was dismissed just prior to the Maryland game up in College Park.

I'd forgotten about recruiting Reggie Evans. We also missed out on a pretty good guard from Iowa around 1999 as well. A kid by the name of Kirk Hinrich. Kelvin wanted him BADLY.

Was that the last game before they renovated GIA? (The Spirit Cup game?)I missed that game and I've always wanted a copy of it.

That's the one. We were down most of the game (double-digits as I recall) but we went to the super spread and started wearing them down. Kelley Newton hit a big three during the comeback.

O-State had a bunch of guys I didn't like and one dude I REALLY hated......Brian Muontonoti. I think I spelled that right. He was a punk, so he didn't really deserve the research to make sure it was correctly spelled.

That win was sweet. They used to include the post game celebration in the pre-game video montage for a while. That locker room looked like it was pretty well bananas.

Eddie was tough as nails that night and Nolan was just on fire. They didn't have an answer for him.

We tried that same offense vs KU earlier that year and lost a heartbreaker in Lawrence. I think the final score was like 51-50 or something really low. Nolan couldn't make the shots that day in Lawrence, but he was money in Stillwater.

For my money it was easily the most satisfying win of the Sampson era. Moreso than Kansas in '95, the Arizona win to break the NCAA winless streak, or the Missouri game that sent us to the Final Four. Nothing like going to your rivals place with an atmosphere as wild as that night was and shutting them up. I would pay good money for a copy of that game.

I had forgotten about how badly Sampson wanted Hinrich.

53-50. Quite possibly one of the most agonizing Sooner BBall losses of my life. We were so much better than them that year. That game, coupled with the 2006 disaster, still irks me because Kelvin NEVER won in Lawrence. Hell, we as a team haven't won there since 1993 (Terry Evans!).

That 2000 O-State game pops up on ESPN Classic from time to time. I'll be on the lookout for it as we get deeper into the season.

Kelvin was butting heads with Roy Williams quite a bit back then. He finished second to Kansas for both Hinrich and Keith Langford. The Langford recruitment was quite a saga. Langford's mom (KLM) was trotting around phog.net implying that her and Lopes had been involved sexually. That gal was not too friendly. Being present for the end of Langford's collegiate career (the Bucknell game) still brings a smile to my face.

The win over KU in the Big 12 tourney in 2002 was very satisfying especially since KU went thru the conference season 16-0. I'd say it and the OSU game in 2000 were the top 2 for me. They probably are a tie on the satisfaction meter.

I was in New York City during Thanksgiving of 2002 and we went to the preseason NIT. I got to watch KU lose to UNC that night in Madison Square Garden and Langford's family was all a few rows in front of us. It was an awesome sight watching them melt down during that game.

I'm with you 04, the 2000 and 2006 games in Allen Fieldhouse were ours. We had them in our grasp but couldn't close the deal. I'll go to my grave believing the officials stole the 2006 game from us, but I don't remember as many bad calls in the 2000 game. We were just off that day offensively.

Man. I had forgotten all abut that. What a mess.

Does anyone remember the poster kelvinball?

hahaha it's funny you bring up montonatti or whatever his name was, because that was the exact game when he and Najera got double technicals for almost getting into a fist-fight.

That was Desmond Mason's last game as a cowboy at home. He cwied.

Mason, Gottlieb, and one other player (can't remember who).

Wasn't that the last game for the transfer from Arkansas who has had a bunch of legal problems since?

Glendon Alexander. And I don't know.

I remember Gottlieb telling the story about how Glendon racked up a huge bill buying PPV porn at his (Doug's) parents house.

Joe Adkins and Glendon Alexander were both seniors that year.

Remember the recruiting class with Adkins, Laster, Alex Webber, Mason, and somebody else? They were heralded as one of the great college basketball recruiting hauls.

I wonder if I could find it on the Cox Cable or ESPN Classic Website.

Nolan Johnson was one of my fave Kelvin era Sooners. He absolutely took Desmond Mason to school. But, Nolan killed me when he missed the front end of a one-one against Indy State in the tournament. we lose in OT. 00 loss to Indy State and the next year to Purdue were killers. I thought we had a chance to make some noise both years....

listened to the Jameel Heywood putback game on KOMA. back in the day, you could get KOMA on the radio in Denver.....at night.

that OSU game was the last one in the old Gallagher Iba pre-remodel.

I'll have to apologize for my memory being so bad (yes, Booger, I really am old enough to be your daddy). But was that the game where Johnnie Gilbert just went off on the jayhawks in the first half? The kid was so jacked up that he almost collapsed from exhaustion and Kelvin had to take him out. But Kansas had no answer for Johnnie in that first half. Don't believe I've ever seen anyone play as hard as Gilbert played that day.
