GAME 13 - OKLAHOMA (9-3) vs Mississippi Valley State (1-12) 7:00pm CST on SECNETWORK+

Whenever Moser is fired or heads back to his comfy mid major home, I hope the next AD discusses scheduling philosophy with every head coaching candidate. This is absolutely embarrassing to see year after year.
This has only been a thing under moser. Prior to moser, our schedule got us into the tourney.

I guess Moser said Kai and Dayton would not have been available regardless of the opponent tonight. Have to think that means they won’t be ready Saturday.

Also, it’s amazing no one on the beat ever reported about Kai till today. We all saw him go to the locker room last week but no one bothered to follow up, apparently.

None of the beat reporters give a ****. All OU basketball info is severely lacking. I’m surprised they even report when the game is being played.

Uninspiring performance overall, but I think the Russian can help us.
Agree. I think his best work offensively will come as a screener & playing off that, hard rolls, short rolls, popping, DHOs. That’s mostly what we do anyway. Tonight didn’t give us much of a sample of that because of their defensive approach.

I liked how he played defensively, even though there were a couple of times where he wasn’t in sync with what we were trying to do (playing a game after only 2-3 days of exposure to our program will do that — it’ll get better). Liked his mobility guarding ball screens, he had a hell of a close out at one point to take away a 3 while being under control & dropping his level to take away the drive. Had a great quick outlet off of a rebound, which was different than what I’ve seen out of our bigs (and most college bigs). His body positioning in the post & off ball was mature. He did his work early there, other than a couple of instances. So often, guys are lazy about it. Very pro-like in that area.

We’ll see, but I liked a lot of what I saw, considering the circumstances.

Welp, that was... a game. Worst team in Div-I in Miss Valley St, ranked dead last in AdjOff and 2nd to dead last in AdjDef...just covered the 45 point spread by 21 points.

Barttorvik says that was our worst defensive performance of the year, I agree:

More notably:

Again, just to re-iterate...this was against the 365th ranked team out of 365 Div-I teams.

-We played awful awful defense...which is effort.
-Wague almost fouled out with 1 point.
-Atak averages 7.9 ppg AFTER this game. Without his breakout game, we win this game by 8 points ... that is wild and does not give me a lot of hopium heading into SEC play.

(Unless we have been sandbagging for fun ... for some reason?)

EvanMiya is the lone bright spot in metrics...they have us 39th in the country (10th in the SEC, 12th in KenPom):

The little explosive emoji? It means

Season so far:

The good news with EvanMiya is we are rated 15th in the nation in Offense, 3rd in the SEC. 108th in Defense making us the 2nd worst rated defensive team in the SEC.

Last bit of fun, bc I know stats do upset some:

Kirill Elatontsev is rated low with 28 possessions in EvanMiya at an OBPR of 0.26.

HOWEVER

With him on the court, the Adjusted Team Off Eff is a whopping 171.4, highest on the team by almost 50 points. Defense is also the worst at 115.7, but still...small sample size yet encouraging. PER of 21 with a TS% of 75.9 is solid. PER is tied for 5th on the team.

This is a bit hyperbolic and hopium, bc it is ONE game vs the WORST team in Div-I, but I like to think Kirill is our x-factor in making a good run. (let a boy dream...)

That was a bit demoralizing to read, Mr Evans, but it does paint a picture as to how bad our defense is. Let's just hope we'll turn it up in conference play. Until we see it for ourselves, it's hard to get excited about what is in front of us.

It is disconcerting that had our 8th best player (give or take) not had a career game, we would have been in a dogfight to beat the single worst team in D-1A.

Not defending our schedule cause it does need to be better, but some name schools below us in ncsos
Iowa
Georgia
Cal
Miami
Boston college
Texas a&m
Missouri
Umass
S Carolina
WV

4 sec schools with lower sos. We need to do better, but it’s not only mosier making the decision to play the poors.

Fair, but I think there is a reason why most of these teams you listed are not also always in the tournament.

Iowa (last appearance 2023 - 8 seed)
Georgia (9 seed last year, 1 appearance in last 10 years)
Cal (last appearance 2016)
Miami (last appearance 2023)
Boston college (last appearance 2009)
Texas a&m (Buzz Williams last 3 years - outlier)
Missouri (6 seed last year, 4 tournaments in the last 12 years)
Umass (last appeareance in 2014)
S Carolina (last appearance in 2024, 6 seed, R1 exit)
WV (last appearance in 2023, 9 seed)

Also the outlier, Aggies non-con last year was 34th.
