After watching the non-con, I pretty much like all of the new guys better than I thought I would. I knew Atak would be what he has become, and said that after the preseason scrimmage I watched last year. Plenty of weaknesses, but I really think he will be a player to watch in the next couple years.
It is not my opinion that the team will be as a group worse than their individual parts, but that is the question for me about this team. I think it clear this is the best collection of talent Moser has had, so really for the first time IMO, we will see what kind of coach Moser is at this level. And yes, I know, many of you have already made up your mind on that issue.
On the strength of schedule issue, I wonder how much money dictates the schedule. I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me if the top 200 teams want more money to come to norman to play a "money game", and we end up scheduling worse opponents because the cost less and nobody goes to the non-con games (and never have, at least since I have been going to games in the mid 70s. Moser has said that the "neutral site" games have been due to money concerns.
Oklahoma is a football school -- always will be. We have a pretty good history of basketball success considering this fact. We need a new gym and consistent financial support from the University to take our team to a new level. The question of whether Moser can take us there, or whether we need a new coach, I think will be determined, for me, on how he does with this team. There are a lot of good players on this team. This team is far more talented than his previous teams. The talent is there, the depth is there, the shooting is there, the size is there, and so we will see how it all bears out.
