GAME Thread WVU Jan 2nd

I have a love/hate relationship with Reaves...lol.

How many times did he either dribble down or was the first pass recipient and jacked up a 3...?...

I get it, shooters shoot...but as The Mont said... find another way to help your team.. he’s a decent driver...

I think he has all year. Today was an exception IMO.

He long or short on all his 3’s. None that I can remember being way left or right.

Amazing, amazing game by Gibson. We absolutely would not have won without his shots stabilizing us in the 2nd half. So glad he’s a Sooner.

I was also very impressed with our interior defense and rebounding the entire game. With about 5 minutes remaining, WVU had only made six 2-point baskets (they made more late when they drove to score quickly). Kur was a beast today.

This OU team has quality depth, but we still need more production from Reaves and Manek. I will absolutely give credit to them, however, for keeping their heads in the game and finding ways to contribute when their shots weren’t falling. Against TTU, I thought Brady got too upset about missing shots and he let that affect the rest of his game, particularly on defense. He didn’t do that today. His 2 offensive rebounds on one possession and his lone 3 with ~90 seconds left were HUGE.

With that said, there is no world in which Austin Reaves should attempt NINE threes (unless he makes his first, like, seven). This offense is at its best when he is driving — it leads to kick outs, dumping off to big men, Austin scoring near the rim, and/or getting fouled. He drove very few times today (though credit to WVU, whose defense likely had something to do with that).

Blowing a huge lead always puts a weird taste in my mouth, but this was still a top 10 win, and I’m thrilled. We put on a show in the first half, and the last ten minutes of the 2nd was objectively fun basketball — two good teams trading punches and an all-time performance from Gibson. Fingers crossed we can steal one this week. We’ll see!

Well said, Mont! Not much there I don’t agree with.

I’m glad you gave Manek and Reaves credit for showing their maturity in the final minutes by making plays that were key to our win. I was cheering when Brady went all beast mode on the offensive board to get back to back rebounds that helped us hold on to our lead. I hope we’ll see more of that!

I don’t even know what to say about Mo! If the team gives a game ball or a MVP award, he earned it. I’m not sure what we would have done if he was not on our roster this season? Well, yes I do. In all likelihood, our players would have left the LNC with a frown on their faces. Great game, Mo!

It is always good to win, especially against a top 10 team.

Much better inside defense and rebounding today.

Like our depth. That will help us improve.

Have never cared much for our offense. Too much one on one play and far too many early trey attempts from way out with a lot of time left. The poor shot selection leads to the big runs by our opponents. I am a big proponent of working hard to get our best shooters shots that they hit the best. Guess I prefer the Sampson approach rather than Kruger's equal opportunity offense.

Don't understand why we give up so many treys. Other than the wide open shots from the corners we largely were up pretty tight on the shooters and they still hit more than 50 Percent.

I have always thought that we play so hard on defense in the early part of the game that we seem to lose half a step later in the game. Don't know a solution to that other than use our depth.

I will say this: I have more than had my fill of Harmon ending up on the floor at the end of a drive to the basket. It takes him out of the play, and there was one instance today in which we'd have gotten possession of the ball after a WVU player touched it last on its way out of bounds, but there was Harmon, lying on the ground, and the ball landed on him.

100% agree.... He goes flailing on the baseline at least 5 times a game and takes himself out of the play. He rarely gets a foul call in those situations as well. He actually did it more last year. I felt like he was on the floor half the time he touched the ball last season.

A great win when you consider how many guys didn't shoot the ball today. Mo was great!
The difference between this game and Tech was Brady wasn't pouting because the ball wouldn't fall in the hole. He continued to defend and rebound.
Davion decided it was his mission to dribble the basketball today. No idea what he was doing out their dribbling the possession away 35 feet from the basket.

Your last two sentences made me laugh....TODAY.... yesterday was a different story...

To my blind eye.... we really like to double on the post...leaving a guy open and our scrambling/cover is a bit suspect. Just my 2 cents..

Part of it was. there was no one to throw it to. there were times he looked like he wanted to get rid of it but austin couldnt get open. .

But I agree. Way too much dribbling at the end.

True. But, when it was obvious early on Culver would have his way inside, I thought Lon’s decision to double down on him was a good one. Unfortunately, that left someone open on the perimeter and WVU’s shooters made us pay, especially in the second half.

Doubling the post did way more good than harm. Most of their 3s were contested. 2 were because somehow someone didn’t know who they were guarding & a lot of the others were because Reaves was running through 2-3 screens & nobody was bumping Sherman. Bridges & Matthews making those shots was just them feeding off of momentum. Look what Alabama did to Tennessee yesterday, sometimes teams go crazy for stretches.

oh I agree...just saying that seems to be the MO, to double the post thus leaving someone on the wing open....hopefully Kur can step up a little more so we don't have to as much....against post players.

def rather have an open 3 taken than a power move inside...odds are less will be made (3's)...just seems not against us...:ez-roll:

You are correct, of course. But to be honest, it doesn’t seem to matter if we double down in the post, play man to man or a straight up zone. Sooner (no pun intended) or later, the teams we play find a way to get wide open shots from behind the arc.

If anyone out there knows why, please pass it on to Lon or a member of his staff. :D

I don’t think Victor will give Kur his spot back. I think Victor gets better and better as the year goes on.

Really nice win. Could not believe how poorly they played through most of the second half, but very nice to make the plays and shots late to seal the win.

We seem to play WVU well. Now, let's play well in Manhattan or Ames for a change.

Yep. Culver missed a lot of minutes in the second half when they were draining 3s, many of which were not tightly contested. I have some sympathy for our team when the opponent has a decent big but I don’t have any sympathy when they don’t or when he is not in. We have guys with enough athletic talent to play solid perimeter D.

And especially when Kuath is in we should always make shooters beat us off the dribble and then
create havoc, IMO. There are a few players who can punish you for doing that but not nearly as many as those who can drain open 3s.
