OU's Gerber, Wright Named to Men's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team
NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma men's basketball players Beau Gerber and Ryan Wright were named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league office announced Wednesday. Among 21 total student-athletes recognized in men's basketball, Gerber was a first-team selection and Wright was a second-team honoree.
A mechanical engineering major from Winfield, Kan., Gerber is a senior who has played in seven games this year. The forward has scored four points and grabbed two rebounds on the season.
Wright, a senior forward from Mississauga, Ontario, graduated from OU last spring with a degree in international and area studies is working on a master's degree in human relations. Wright is averaging 4.2 points and 4.4 rebounds on the year while ranking second on the team with his .544 field goal percentage. He has made 12 starts in his 28 games this season.
The honor for Wright was the third of his career. He was a second-team academic all-league selection last year and also in 2007 while a sophomore at UCLA.
To qualify for the all-academic team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or over each of the two previous semesters) and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA, while second-team honorees are those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Gerber, Wright and the rest of the Sooners will close the regular season Saturday at home against Texas A&M. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. CT.
