Norman, Okla. – University of Oklahoma sophomore guard Gioya Carter was tabbed the Phillips 66 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week following her play against Yale and No. 21 West Virginia.

Carter averaged a team-best 20.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in Oklahoma’s two wins. After being reinserted back into the starting lineup following six games coming in off the bench, she shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe.

Carter began the week scoring a then-career-high 17 points to help the Sooners halt a three-game losing skid with a 71-54 victory over Yale. She also grabbed a then-career-high tying six boards, passed out four assists and made two steals.

The sophomore guard followed that performance up by re-setting her career-best in points with 24 while playing a season-high 35 minutes against the Mountaineers. Sixteen of her 24 points came in the first half when OU’s two leading scorers, Sharane Campbell-Olds and Kaylon Williams, were on the bench with foul trouble. Carter also set a career-high in rebounds with eight and had three assists.

The Big 12 Player of the Week honor is the first of Carter’s career.

Yes, congratulations are in order, and the POW award was well deserved.

Congrats to GCarter! I've been watching this kid/young lady since she arrived and the one thing I like most about her is that she comes out to play. She appears to have passion, heart and is fearless. Her effort level is always tops.

Really good Job by Gioya, hopefully she can stay consistent for OU.

The last two games by Carter are like watching the parting of the Red Sea. Like the light turned on and how.

Congratulations to Gioya. Well deserved. We would not have won without her. That was really taking over a game.

Congrats to Gioya and the OU coaching staff. Her development has been nice, and I think her ceiling is really high. Her defense and rebounding have always been good, so she is working to become a well rounded player deserving of more honors.

I think we are finally seeing what Sherri has occasionally referred to. All that is needed now is for her to bring it every game.
