Getting players summer job was (is?) part of Merv Johnson's job description. Getting them jobs in which they get paid for not working is not. If there had been any indication that he was doing that, his situation would be analogous to that of Oronde Taliaferro (assuming for the moment the worst thoughts of OT are true). But there is no indication that Merv Johnson was involved in any wrongdoing.

My point is that give the investigation some time to work itself out; many wanted to crucify Merv (mostly fans of other "rivals") and look what happened.

We have some extreme FAKES on this board. This issue has smoked them out. Calling attention to it and letting the chips fall where they may.

I don't think anyone accused Barry Switzer of changing that back-up QB's transcript (Kerry Jackson, was it?), but we still went on probation and forfeited a bunch of games and Barry took the blame in eyes of the nation

.OK LET'S CLEAR THIS UP:THE ALTERING OF KERRY JACKSON"S,MIKE PHILLIPS IN 1972 WAS UNDER FAIRBANKS,NOT SWITZER.BILL MICHAELS WAS THE COACH WHO (ALONG WITH THE HS COACHES) ALTERED THE TRANSCRIPTS.secondly there were not several forfeits but three(NU,CU,OSU).OSU IS THE ONLY SCHOOL THAT ACTUALLY CLAIMS THE FORFEIT AS A WIN.

And I don't think Switzer was accused of being hands-on in the misdeeds that led to our probation in the '80s, but it cost him his job nonetheless and furthered soiled Switzer's reputation.

I think there's room to be angry at Coach Capel and still not be a bad Sooner fan or even be calling for his job. I think it's clear he wasn't careful enough in making his hires when he arrived in Norman, considering the preexisting circumstances he inherited. And that's disappointing, to put it mildly.[/Q

I understand being upset over this situation but lets take a reality check here.1) As far as character issues with TMG and Tiny,there was no great buzz aboutcharacter issues with them,trust me Jeff cares about character, 2)Orande had an outstanding record as a recruiter and coach at Arky,I have never heard any whispers even from opposing fans concerning Taliferro at OU or Arky so where is the reason to question his character prior to his hiring? I agree this season was a cluster fuucck but I think Capel's record overall and at OU should get him the leeway to right the ship. IF there is any indication that Capel was involved then I say he DOES need to go, Personally I trust Jeff to turn it around and get us back on track.

I'm sorry, but has there ever been any suggestion that Merv Johnson arranged for Rhett Bomar and JD Quinn to work at Big Red Imports because they would not be forced to show up at work despite receiving a paycheck? Getting guys jobs was part and parcel to his job description, and may still be. I really do not see how these situations are analogous at all.

Mr. B! continues to point at Merv as someone who broke rules, yet the University never acknowledged he broke a rule and, most importantly, neither did the NCAA.

He helps athletes obtain a summer job. He does not negotiate some scenario where the player is paid to not come to work. If he did, he would have already been fired.
