I hope I'm wrong but this feels like a significant blow to this team's potential. Our options for depth at the 2 are really, really not good now.

I think its a gigantic blow as well. I think it will cost OU 5-6 games. You are basically losing one of your top 3 players and your best pure scorer, and the only guy on the team who can create his own offense.

I think his loss is significant. What I liked about Calvin was that he didn't seen to get caught in the momentum of the game, so that if we were in a lull or the rim had a lid, it didn't seem to phase him. He just played his aggressive offensive and defensive game.

He and clark are the only two kids on the team that didn't need an open shot to score, both could create a shot out of a guarded position. This has already come in handy a could times this year.

Well, life over basketball, and I sincerely wish the best for Calvin and I will follow and root for him. He will always be a sooner to me.

I think this hurts alot for this season. Mayby not so much next season. I have this sinking feeling that one of these days Calvin will show up somewhere and remind us of the Scotty Reynolds deal.

I wish we had the back story and not just the spin.

To be honest, I dont know how people think losing a guy who will average 12-15 a game will only cost you one game. The one game this year that Calvin didnt play well OU lost by 20.

I think he will cost 2-3 games, but that wasn't an option. The team will learn to play without him.

A lot. Before Newell left the team we were going to have troubles scoring on a consistent basis. Now that he left it's probably gonna be really ugly at times. Dang what a blow.

Extremely bad. We are going to severely miss him, we needed him to get buckets once conference play starts. I had us squeeking into the NCAA with nice improvement over the season. Now I think we might make the NIT or that other tourney only with lots of luck. that is how valuble he was.

6+, more like 9 or 10 games.

newell was NOT a top 3 player on this team ..

he was very improved ... but he would have averaged 8-10 ppg not close to 15 ..

he might cost the sooners a couple of wins

Haha, you voted 0 games. Losing your best offensive player will cost a team 0 games, lol.

He is the best at creating his own shot. That does not make him the best offensive player. There is way too small a sample size to determine who the best offensive player is. Pledger has been the better scorer, thus far, just look at the scoring averages. Pledger averaged more points, better FG%, better 3pt% and better FT%. Newel has proven that he can create offense better than Pledger, but he hasn't proved he is the best offensive player on the team. For all we know, Osby might have that distinction by the end of the year.

Grooms
Blair
Pledger

Who else plays guard? Can somebody please answer that?? What if one of the 3 listed above gets hurt?

It's an enormous loss but I can't envision any scenario in which he costs us more than 3-4 games at absolute most. Going from 20 wins to, say, 14 wins would be losing almost 1/3 of the value of your entire team. Calvin Newell is good, but nothing close to that. He'll cost us 2-3 games.

Actually, I'm underselling even that. At this point in time, going from 20 wins to 14 wins would be like losing way more than 1/3 of the value of your entire team, since we have 4 wins already. It's crazy talk to think losing Newell will cost anywhere close to 6 wins IMO.

Good point... we will see.

Newell's impact will definitely be felt on offense, mainly because we don't have anyone on our roster who can fill the void. It will have to be done by committee on both ends of the floor. Thirteen points per game is a lot to make up for a team with no super stars.
