How would one feel if Fran Fraschilla was the next coach

What exactly would a good fit for OU look like? I'm not asking for a specific person, just the type.

Maybe I'm dense but I can't see myself getting all fired up over a guy that was run off by new Mexico and hasn't coached in nearly 10 years.

One would feel awful...

Buzz, Billy, or Johnny Jones.

Just to clarify his stay at UNM some - he had some major discipline problems and some of his "big-time recruits" bombed. There were no NCAA bids and only one decent run in the MWC (his first year).

He walked into a good situation in that he was given the biggest "pass" in recent memory for a UNM coach in any sports in the print media. Anything good that happened was "on him," and anything that went wrong was his predecessor's fault. The main beat writer at the morning paper, who most people in this city hate, even covered up some misbehavior between teammates once, and also did three separate "rehab" articles on a kid who ran afoul of the previous staff and was benched.

I think the guy is basically decent, just not with a whistle around his neck. There were some stories that came out of his St. John's stay that indicated he was brutal on assistants - and one called him "Bobby Knight in Training Wheels." He also cleaned out the roster, with the media's tacit approval (as opposed to how it was in the 90's when any player transfer was the lead story on the evening news and then caused people to assume the player was automatically being "run off").

Fran finally did "lose" the media in his third season (his last), in which they barely finished above .500 and had problems within the team that boiled over in a loss at Air Force. People finally got fed up at that point, and only a scant few were still drinking the Fran Kool-Aid.

I thnk the guy needs to stay on ESPN, where his decent side can override whatever whacked him out on the court.

I can't understand how he could be a realistic candidate for the job.

Sounds a lot like some of the Capel Defenders

To me, at the end of the day, it is about talent, and Fran has
access to it. Coaching can be overrated. Talent and pllayer development us where it is at.

Did he not have access to said talent at New Mexico?

He did not.

UNM is a 2nd tier program at most.

I'd rather have Fran any day over Capel and I think Fran would do a decent job. He wouldn't get outcoached by the Scott Drew's, Travis Ford's, and Mark Turgeon's, I can assure you.

Now, is he my top choice? No, but I think he would be a good coach if he were hired.

A guy that accomplished absolutely nothing at New Mexico and hasn't coached in nearly 10 years would outcoach Travis Ford and Mark Turgeon? Why?

Why what?

I'm not proclaiming him to be the next John Wooden, just that I think he could outcoach either of these coaches as well as Drew and a few others in the conference that Jeff could not outcoach.

Let me put it more simply...he would not be as overmatched as Capel was when facing most of the coaches in our conference.

Like I say, he's not my top choice but if he got the job I think he would do much better than what we've seen the last 5 years.

Just my opinion.

My question "why" was to say why do you believe he would be able to outcoach Ford and/or Turgeon? What has he done to indicate that he would be able to do so? His three year tenure at UNM was a complete failure and he has been out of the coaching game since 2002. That last fact should tell you all you need to know about him.

Well, he took UNM to 3 straight NIT's, which isn't saying much but at least it was postseason play. You also have to remember UNM plays in a 2nd tier conference and is located in a state with very little basketball talent, so I wouldn't call his tenure at UNM a complete failure, but it was disappointing.

I point more to his years at St. Johns and Manhattan where he was pretty successful.

I will add his success was when he was at inner-city metropolitan type colleges and he was probably able to easily recruit the inner-city kids. I think he would have a hard time recruiting that kind of athlete to Oklahoma. So, that is a concern.

I think its funny that some people think that Fran would automatically be able to out coach Capel.

That is easy...he beat Sampson in the NCAA tourney with a 13 seed.
