Just to put it out there, I am not opposed to bringing in fresh blood to reinvigorate the program. However, I will not be "devastated" if Capel gets another year to resurrect his career. I absolutely think that Capel created this problem, however I think anyone in life needs to learn from mistakes and have a chance to right the wrongs. Again just my opinion, probably in the minority these days. Just say I am squarely on the fence (however if we totally whiff on the targeted recruits I will be in the new blood camp as I think Capel will have lost the respect nationally from the level of talent needed to bring the program back)

What I want to know is:

If Capel gets another year, are the posters here that are adamently on the "fire Capel!" bench going to continue to support the program? Or will you throw you hands up in disgust and just follow the Thunder? The posts on this site are becoming increasingly apparent of where the lines in the sand are drawn, some seemingly to the point of no return. It just seems like some of you are ready to abandon ship if the status quo remains. IMO, if Capel gets another year, I agree its absolutely NCAA tourney required or your time is up. I will actively follow this team throught the highs and lows next season regardless who is helming the ship, lauding effort and improvement and actively criticizing when warranted. Will you do the same? Or will the
overall negativity of this site persist until the day Capel is gone? Will the "fire Capel!" camp accept that Joe C./David Boren has given him a final chance and get behind the team and genuinely support the efforts to improve next season and compete at a high level once again? Just looking for a heads up here... or will I have to wade through 15 offseason threads of how we will rue the day that Felton Jeff Capel III was given 1 more year to further drive our program to the dregs of the college basketball world before I can get to a positive post that brings thoughtful opinion, insight, and genuine enthusiasm on the upcoming season? Getting to the point, if Capel survives to coach another year are the lines in the sand firmly cemented, set to remain regardless and the Sooner tea party will continue unabated, or will the fire JCIII camp support the Sooners in a positive and supportive way and hope for ultimately what we all want, a remarkable turnaround putting the Sooners back in consistent contention on a national level? I am ready to bury the last 2 seasons as much as the next guy, but I am not ready to mire myself in the same daily diatribes if the chips fall where some undoubtedly and openly are rooting against. Thanks in advance.

Great question(s).

Me - I'll watch every game next year (just like this year) even if a hippopotamus were the coach. That said, I wouldn't be exactly thrilled to do so. AND I definitely won't be paying to come up (from Dallas) to Norman to watch in person more than once or twice. Call me fairweather if you must but that's how I feel right now. I never wanted Jeff in the beginning and he has reaffirmed those first thoughts. If I were a booster (and I'm nowhere close), I wouldn't be donating much these days either. I'm a nobody so my opinion doesn't matter, but my opinion is similarly close to the majority and they matter.

Threw up my hands last offseason, didn't renew my tickets. My disgust will just grow.

Go ahead and kick me in the nuts. I will probably spend my Saturdays at the gun range, golf course or family instead of planning around a Saturday beat down. I live in Houston though so I am not one of the 17 people that showed up this year.

Just think about how we have fallen when there are so many empty seats for Bedlam.

Whoever chooses this answer needs to get kicked in the nuts.

I'm glad I didn't intend to pick that answer......:ez-laugh::ez-laugh:

I can understand both points of view. As I said once before, as long as i see players on the court with effort that I can be proud of, I'll support them. I'll leave the question of if and when changes need to be made to people paid to make those decisions.

J,

Thanks for the honest response. I know many have spoken with the many empty seats I saw this year, surely it has been duly noted. I'm sure there are several people of influence that have the ear of Joe C with a bad taste in their mouth, hopefully we'll find out soon which direction the program is going. If JC survives and nothing has changed through the first 10 games, I'll be right there lighting torches along with everyone else, debating who the next in line will be. I do sincerely hope the opposite to happen though...

I think I may switch to listening to games instead of watching them. Hey the new PBP announcer may just be calling actual basketball instead of whatever BBS was seeing ;)

I think many will take a wait and see approach. If we get off to a good start people will jump on the bandwagon, if not, it could get very ugly.

Most fans are extremely fickle, they can barely see past what's in front of their face. Honestly, I could see Capel being almost universally popular this time next season.

I'll acknowledge Htown, Rom and Speedy as definites in the done with OU as long as Capel is coach camp. Can't blame you, but I'm not to that level yet.

I am not done, just not happy!!!!!

I don't see the big turn around coming. I don't see Osby and Goff as big difference makers. If they were then they would have at least averaged double digits in the previous stops.

Gotcha,

I've got a decent feeling about Osby, he just looks the part... but we'll need more help to succeed. We absolutely have to shore up the PG position and get a true C to compete.

I didn't want him in the first place either, however, I support the sooners not the coach so I will still support the team if he is brought back for next year.

Having said that, my posting style won't change because I'm not somebody who acts like everything is peaches and cream when it's clearly not. I will hope Osby is athletic enough to cover up coaching deficiencies, but in the back of my mind I will know this can't happen and that we are doomed for 9th or 10th place next year.

In past years I dvr'ed every game if I couldn't watch it live, but this year I only watched the games when I was at home with nothing else to do. I'm not one who can sit and enjoy watching my team play like crap and get their brains beat out. Next year I probably will watch even less of the games if capel is back.

Such a relief to see a well thought out post for once. I was really growing weary of the all or nothing posts (both for and against). I certainly don't expect everyone to keep a level head, but this place has been so negative lately it has been a pain to continue to visit the boards. I was almost at my end, but this kind of constructive approach is a breath of fresh air.

There are a lot of questions to be answered. I am not happy with the way this year went, but honestly, we finished about where I thought we would record wise. I don't want to play the "what if" game at all, but if we don't lose the Chaminade game (embarassing) and we pull out the W on OSU and Nebraska, then I would be absolutely thrilled with the season given what we had on hand. I think that Capel still has a lot of things to learn or improve upon when it comes to coaching, but I support him getting one more year to try and right the mess that came from the McDonalds massacre.

I'm in the same mindset as a lot of other people in that I want to see us make the tourney next year or be the first team out. If that doesn't happen then I would support the decision by the administration to make a change. But for this year, I have a hard time saying that heads should roll when everyone knew coming into this season that it was going to be brutal and we would be lucky to finish with the same record as last year's "team". That doesn't mean that the expectations should drop to that level from this point forward either. It just means that we as fans need to support the team, support the university and hope that we WORK our way back into the respectable program we know we can be.

The real question is, when does each side admit they were wrong? If we nose dive next year how quickly will the Capel supporters jump off the ship? And vice-versa, if we make the tournament next year, will the people who wanted to ax Capel admit they were wrong?

Here is the million dollar question, and something I've wanted to address for awhile now.

I don't speak for any of the others that want Jeff gone, but I'm certainly not suggesting that he won't ever take OU to another NCAA Tournament, or even string together a few good seasons. Heck, if he stays at OU another 10 years, he might even get another Elite 8.

The reasons I want Jeff gone are two-fold. First, he has done such a poor job to date, that I think he deserves to lose his job. Period. You cannot run a program like OU into the ground, and just expect more time b/c you are Jeff Capel. Secondly, I don't think he can keep OU consistently in the top 4 of the Big 12. That is where we belong. Only KU and UT have programs that in theory "should", at this point in time, finish above OU most years. And yes, you can argue that the list should only be KU. So while I admit Capel may have some good years in him, I simply don't see him being consistent enough to be worth a further investment.

So if OU improves next year, or heck, even limps into the tournament, I haven't been proven wrong. I simply think the "sucess" will be short lived, and we'll be back out of the tournament within a year or two.

How is that line of thinking any different from those of us that think the lack of success will be short lived?
