Hypothetical ?

The real question is, when does each side admit they were wrong? If we nose dive next year how quickly will the Capel supporters jump off the ship? And vice-versa, if we make the tournament next year, will the people who wanted to ax Capel admit they were wrong?

I don't think Capel deserves to keep his job but if he comes back and takes us to the tourney I'll be ecstatic because first and foremost I'm a huge OU basketball fan. You'll never find me rooting against OU to prove a point to anonymous internet posters.

However, I'm not sure that making the tourney in and of itself will convince me that I'm "wrong" in my opinion that Capel isn't the right person to lead the program long term.

How is that line of thinking any different from those of us that think the lack of success will be short lived?

My line of thinking is right, yours is wrong?!? :ez-laugh:

In all seriousness, it isn't. I'm just not sure what you point to as evidence to suggest Capel can put OU in the top 4 year in and year out. But you are certainly entitled to that opinion. I'd just say, that if Joe C has any doubt, any second thoughts, NOW is the time to get out. Not one year further into the darkness.

Here is the million dollar question, and something I've wanted to address for awhile now.

I don't speak for any of the others that want Jeff gone, but I'm certainly not suggesting that he won't ever take OU to another NCAA Tournament, or even string together a few good seasons. Heck, if he stays at OU another 10 years, he might even get another Elite 8.

The reasons I want Jeff gone are two-fold. First, he has done such a poor job to date, that I think he deserves to lose his job. Period. You cannot run a program like OU into the ground, and just expect more time b/c you are Jeff Capel. Secondly, I don't think he can keep OU consistently in the top 4 of the Big 12. That is where we belong. Only KU and UT have programs that in theory "should", at this point in time, finish above OU most years. And yes, you can argue that the list should only be KU. So while I admit Capel may have some good years in him, I simply don't see him being consistent enough to be worth a further investment.

So if OU improves next year, or heck, even limps into the tournament, I haven't been proven wrong. I simply think the "sucess" will be short lived, and we'll be back out of the tournament within a year or two.

I can't disagree, which is why I won't be surprised if ties are cut. I agree consistent NCAA appearances peppered with legit Final 4 runs are the requirement at OU.

man people hate capel more than i thought.. im not a big fan and if we have a option we like then boot him..

I really don't see it that way.

I can't speak for all of the so called "capel haters" but I don't hate Jeff Capel one bit. In fact, the word hate isn't in the top 50 words I would use to describe my feelings or opinions of the man.

To me it's not about hating Capel, it's about loving OU basketball. As with anything you care about you want the best for it and in my opinion Jeff Capel is not the best thing for OU basketball.

I'd agree with this. I can see the pros of letting him go now, especially if we can land a proven coach.

You support the program. I am a fan of the University of Oklahoma athletics not Jeff Capel, not Kelvin Sampson, not Billy Tubbs. I don't think Jeff is owed anything. He has been here for 5 seasons and the state of the program is definitely much worse than when he arrived. Our tradition as a basketball school is waning from the vision of future high school recruits. He has been paid in excess of $4.5 million dollars to advance this program. He has been unsuccessful in the overall scheme.

As a 25 year season ticket holder my butt was in the seats for every game this year and last. I could write a treatise on why Jeff should be gone but it answer is simple. He was hired to do a job. He was given 5 years to get the job done. The results are the program is in worse shape than before Billy Tubbs arrived in Norman. Joe Castiglione's loyalty needs to be to the university not to Jeff Capel. That being said. I will support the school. I will support the team. I will support the coach during the season. But I want Jeff Capel gone.

What I post on this board does nothing to effect a coaching change. It is just another of hundreds of opinions on this forum that with $2.00 will not buy a good cup of coffee.

I don't see why either side should feel they were ever "wrong." My stance has not changed since the beginning of this year. I simply maintained that if the team shows up to play every conference game (they did in all but two of them), Jeff should get one more year. If OU goes to the NCAA Tournament next year, it doesn't mean I was "right." I can't blame those who want him gone now.

Conversely, if things don't get better next year (and we will all want him gone if they don't), it doesn't mean I was "wrong", either. Sometimes, it comes down to personal preference, or coaching style, or whatever. Sadly, there are a small percentage of posters who actually would rather be "right" on a message board at the expense of OU's success...not realizing how pathetic that is.

yes i will continue to be there & support them no matter what. remember this isnt JUST about capel its about those guys that work hard & get out there & play their butts off. this hasnt been the best season win wise, but effort wise (with the exception of maybe the TTU game ive heard) has been fantastic. these guys actually care about the university & the team unlike last year. so ill be there front row every game i can just like this year.

At some point your personal preference should give way to what's happening on the floor, should it not?

I like Capel a lot, but if we nose dive next year I think he should be fired. For those who think he's a bad coach, if he leads us to the NCAA's the next few years, I'd think they might have second thoughts about firing him.

That's what I meant by, right and wrong. Ultimately, you should want OU to win, regardless of who the coach is.

Please fell free not to watch all. The kids can do better without you, it's not about the coach until Joe C. DECIDE TO MAKE A CHANGE OR NOT. I will always support the kids that want to be here.
