I will probably get ripped for saying this

Joe may not properly value the need for speed. Capel was hired very late and a similar late hire this time could hurt recruiting efforts this late period. I believe next season can be a real positive one, creating momentum which would help future recruiting. Not saying to be hasty but there has been enough time if Joe has been at it hard.

Joe C and Boren need a good men's basketball program to make the soon to come Sooner network deal more valuable.

Furthermore, what coach have we been beat out on? You can't really say you lost out on a coach who decides to stay where he is.

Capel was hired very late because if I remember correctly, Kelvin left very late. There were few candidates to choose from.
This time around, Joe really has no excuse.
However, the pool of available coaches is actually very small.
And since it appears Joe insists on a squeaky clean hire, that pool may be no more than 2 or 3.
I hope we (including Joe) do not regret passing on BCG.

Given that the firing wasn't knee jerk. I suspect Joe should have had a short list before March.

He probably did.
That doesn't necessarily mean those on his short list anywhere close to accepting the job.
For instance Buzz. Everything looked MUCH different for him a month ago than it does now.

Listen, I do not have a lot of inside knowledge about anything besides football, but I can say that I know Boren and Castiglione want to be great in everything. Boren, especially, wants to be great in everything. But, like everything you have to have priorities and football is number one. It is what pays the bills. Just ask OSU why they are doing everything to be great at football. It is because they want the cash cow that can make your athletic programs great (OU, Ohio St, Florida, Michigan, texas)....

This is why people always ask questions to our basketball coaches about being number 2. We have to leverage the two. We have to figure out how to make basketball great with the resources that we have. Look at the tv ratings of our basketball games, we always win the ratings. We have to figure this out...
