I doubt he thought it was out of bounds. A coach can't go around saying he thinks he could get fired. It would sabotage the recruiting class and spur on his critics even more than they already were. I think everybody recognizes that as just standard coach-speak.
Just like when the CEO of Blockbuster was making the rounds a couple of months ago talking about how strong their business plan was and how bright the future looked. Now they are bankrupt, and nobody is really surprised about it.
When you are the custodian of an instution, you don't go around saying negative things about your future in public. It's bad business.
