if buddy leaves

Top 2o to 25 to start the season, with a good chance of moving up in the polls as the new players on next year's team begin to mesh and find their place in our offense.

I'd say borderline top 25 and fluctuate in and out throughout the year.

Depends on how good the young guards are. But we'll at least be as good as this year with the potential to be better.

not very.

What did you think after 2013 when OU lost Osby, M'baye, Pledger, Fitsgerald, Grooms and Aren't?

Certainly OU will be better with Buddy but there is no reason to panic if Buddy Leaves. OU was 20-12 and 11-7 in the Big XII in 2013. In 2014 after losing 5 of the top 10 players and probably 5 of the top 7 players, OU was 23-10 and 12-6 in the Big XII in 2014. Osby was every bit as important as Hield. Pledger and M'Baye were as important as Thomas. (M'Baye averaged 10 points a game and Pledger averaged 11.5. Fitzgerald averaged 5.7 and Grooms averaged 5 plus was the staring point guard.

When OU lost those guys we had guys like Spangler, Cousins, Hield, Hornbeak, Cam Clark around plus an impact freshman like Woodard.

We don't really know what we have in Odomes. James is rehabbing still. Booker is gone.

We come pretty thin guard pretty quick.

All of a sudden we are relying on guys like Manyang, Lattin, Buford, Odomes to put up around 35ppg together to cover what we'll miss from Hield and Thomas (if Hield leaves).

I just don't think we have the scorers waiting in the wings to help cover our basis if Hield leaves.

I think if Hield leaves and Thoams leaves and if we dont' get some unexpected impact transfer then we will be set back some. Pretty average. Probably around 4th or 5th in conference. Make the NCAA's as a 7-10 seed.

That's not terrible, just reality of situation if it goes down like that

There is so much more to the team returning this year than there was to the team returning for 2014 it isn't even comparable. Ignoring talent arguments, OU returns experience and a solid defense. Additionally, OU doesn't have to worry about the PG position and they did in 2015. Nobody knew Woodard would be an effective starter as a freshman. It is a given he will be an effective starter as a junior.

OU will not be as good without Hield. There is no denying that but OU will be a good team with or without Hield.

It depends on how quickly and how well Buford, Manyang, Odomes, and maybe McNeace fit in (probably in that order). I think Christian James may need some time to recover from his injury, but if can fully recover it will be a boost.

Some of the issues to address include:
  • Decide who will replace Buddy at wing. I would guess the options to be Buford, Odomes, and James in that order. James was the #1 shooting guard in Texas before his injury.
  • Determine if Buford or Odomes can play and defend on the perimeter.
  • Someone has to become a "go to" guy offensively, and it wont be Woodard or Spangler.
  • Develop a post offense from Lattin, Spangler, Buford, or Manyang. We need to have a threat inside. Replacing Thomas is as important as replacing Buddy.
  • Settle on a backup PG

Just my opinions........ If Buddy leaves, I expect to be ranked 20th plus or minus a couple of spots.

I agree and that is why I say no need to panic and assume not very good. A team in the top 30 is a good basketball team.

So, what you're saying is, we had similar questions? As has been pointed out, the glaring difference is, we don't have a question at PG. The program is in better shape depth wise and most of the new guys are more highly thought of than the guys you listed.

I don't know why people keep saying Christian James will need time to rehab. He came back with no restrictions, playing in his HS team's playoffs. Now was he a little out of shape? Of course. He just needs to get in shape this summer, which I'm sure he will, and then OU just needs to turn him loose. Let him play and get experience at this level. Because there will be a pretty big vacuum in 16-17..

Don't get me wrong, I want Buddy to come back for the sake of OU's success in the 15'-16' season. However, another part of me wouldn't mind him moving along to accelerate the development of guys like Buford, James, and Odomes by getting them more minutes.

We have Spangler, Cousins, Woodard, and Lattin this year! We didn't know Woodard would be good that year (heck, he still can't buy praise from a lot on this board). Talking about next year right now is fool's play. Who knows? OU may have another person coming in. I could easily see Kruger's system getting OU to 3rd in the Big 12 on system alone (let alone the talent he has brought in).

Sad that you wish the big 12 POY off the roster. I want to win next year, those pups will learn from buddy and still play a lot.

Just curious. Who are these 2/3 conference teams and 15/25 teams nationally that are going to leap frog over OU. Who do they lose and who do they have coming back and coming in that that make their prospects brighter than OU's?

We were as good as we were last season partly because Buddy and Thomas are really nice players. We weren't any better than what we were because of a couple of glaring weaknesses. We were undersized and had a thin bench. Those two problems are fixed. If we lose a couple of nice players and replace them with a couple of high ceiling younger ones while shoring up the leaks, how do we get worse?

Recruiting top flight basketball talent to OU has always been problematic and Kruger may have some limitations as a coach. Even with that, the program is in good shape now and has plenty of ceiling left. Kruger has moved the program forward every year and there is plenty of room left. The program will surely take a step back one of these days. But, I certainly wouldn't expect that day to come just because we have a couple of 2nd round draft choices move on.

He had some setbacks during his rehab. He had a bad break and had an operation. I guess because I have screws in my ankle and a plate in my leg after a bad sports injury, I kind of know what he's going thru. He expected to be cleared by the start of the year and it didn't happen for another 2 months.

He wasn't able to dunk until a week or so before his first game back ...... About 6 months after the injury. I know you went to his second game back. He was about 20 pounds over weight and basically played the post.

I just think he still has a lot of work to do after missing his senior year. He's got to be quick enough to play against guys like Cousins if he wants to take Booker's 6th man spot. If he wants to take Buddy's spot (if he leaves), then he has to beat out guys Buford and Odomes..... and those guys aren't shabby. I'm not convinced a summer of pickup ball is enough for him to catch back up. I sure hope so. Time will tell.

I agree, but we'll still be pretty good with them learning under Cousins and Spangler. If Buddy is here they will learn under him. We'll still have a solid lineup and solid team with or without Buddy. With Buddy we have a shot at being a Final Four team. We'll still have a shot at winning the conference without Buddy.

All good insight. Hopefully his bone heals back to even stronger than before, like many do. Maybe over these late spring and summer months it will be enough.. Because there's nothing like game experience. But, if he only gets walkon minutes I say redshirt him. Hopefully we can get some positive practice reports this summer!
