I would push to become the #1 asst coach at OU...Lon is 58...

He would be better off to move to a mid-major as HC than decome an assistant at OU. That is, if his goal is to coach at OU.

Without moving up, next time around he'll still have the same knock against him. Assisting at OU isn't going to remove the "never been a D1 HC" tag.

I think it would be a great story if he does end up getting the job down the line and having great success here. But OU isn't going to hire a guy with no relevent HC experience unless they are extremely desperate.

I keep reading this type of stuff.

It happens, but not often. Lon is going to hire assistants that he feels comfortable with. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

get Evans in now as the lead assistant. he can learn and be groomed by kruger to become the next head coach when kruger is done.

I agree ....but a coach can not pick asst coaches just on "feeling comfortable with them"
Bob Stoops looked at recruiting in this area...He kept Cale Gundy and went to UT's staff in Austin, Tx and hired Bobby Jack Wright. Stoops said the first time he met BJW was when he hired him but he knew the Texas area.

This isn't football. In football, you have 10 or so asst coaches. In basketball, you get 3.

Kruger has an asst on his staff who has big ties in Texas and that is Lew Hill. Lon will probably bring all 3 of his asst coaches to Norman with him.

that's wrong.

BJW wasn't even coaching when Stoops hired him. He had been fired from Texas a few years earlier when Mack took over for Mackovic.

That's one of the reasons he hired BJW because he wasn't employed and didn't have to wait until after a bowl game to start recruiting. He could start recruiting then. And, Stoops didn't have any other asst coaches as he was an asst coach at Florida.

If Stoops were to leave, most of his asst coaches would go with him, just like Lon is going to do with his coaches.

This.

Probably a bad idea for Lon to hire Evans as an assistant. Every time we lost a game, fans would be screaming "WE WANT EVANS!"

I mean really, how many times in the history of sports has the man who got the head job hired a man who was also interviewed for the job?

I'll just bet that part of the attraction of the job is that Lon's assistants could make more money here than at UNLV. Also it gets their families out of what must be a kind of depressing atmosphere with the down economy and foreclosures everywhere.

Agreed. He needs to go to a BCS conference school as an assistant, wherever that is, to gain experience with D1 basketball. He has nothing to lose. It appears that he doesn't want to leave Oklahoma but if he ever wants to be the head coach at OU, he needs to branch out and get additional experience.

Ironically,

I know a basketball assistant at UCO and I believe that Kruger and Evans do actually know each other.

Wonder if anything could be cooking.

Do you hire a guy that you know wants your job?

his fate is tied to yours as such. say Kruger bombs (hypothetically), pretty unlikely if not impossible OU would then hire from within.

Kruger appears to have long-time assistants so i'd be surprised to see TE come in and certainly surprised to come in as lead assistant. i don't think TE would leapfrog the guys Kruger has worked with before.

Not sure I'd want a guy on my staff that openly campaigned for the job I just got.

Nothing against Evans and I doubt he'd be any kind of "problem", but that might be a little uncomfy for Kruger.

I hope Terry Evans gets the Lamar job, turns that program around, and comes to OU when Lon is ready to retire.

yup. i mean, he's already a head coach with bigger head coaching aspirations. why would he want to be an assistant anywhere? i don't get why people think that is a good path to get where he ultimately wants. how many assistant coaches have been candidates the last two times we needed a coach? just keep moving up the HC ladder as long as he is successful.

Sure going to Lamar would be nice for Evans, but the recruiting is not that much better/bigger than what he is doing now to be honest.

He would have a better chance developing/proving his worth recruiting the big boys if he was an assistant at Oklahoma. Again, Lamar wouldn't do that for him.

Back in the older days you would see a Lamar to Oklahoma, but not as likely anymore. He would have to be a head coach somewhere else after Lamar to get the OU or any big job for that matter.
