Would you vote for this player for national POY if the selection was held today?

Through three games he's averaging 13.6 ppg, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and a little over 3 assists per game. On the somewhat negative side, he turns the ball over at a 3 per game clip and only shoots 40% from the field (31% from three).

If you had a POY vote, would you use it on this player?

I'm sure that those impressive stats have come against top flight competition in some of the big time national televised games.

I don't even think those numbers have you in the all conference conversation.

I would not. However, I would recommend he enter the NBA draft and I would guarantee him a lottery pick.

Might be a little early to have this discussion after 3 games. Especially when he's only played about 25 minutes or less per game.

That said, he still can't shoot. But still gets to the line at a ridiculous rate.

Of course it's too early. I thought about making that admission to start the post, but decided to let it play out to see what kind of reaction I got.

Marcus does a lot of things well. His 9 steals in OSU's game against Utah Valley was Mookie Blalock good. That's what led me to the stat sheet to see how he has fared so far in other categories.

I was shocked to learn that his shooting percentages are subpar, especially for a player who has caused sportscasters and newspaper reporters to slobber all over themselves for months.

No doubt about it, the kid is good. But if the numbers he has put up so far don't improve (and to be honest I believe they will), he will not be in the running for POY honors at the end of the season. At the moment, he's not even the best player in the Big 12.

Now that I have thoroughly hacked Marcus off and contributed to back to back career games when OSU plays the Sooners, I may owe Coach Kruger an apology when the season is over. :ez-laugh:

Nobody fills up a stat sheet more than Marcus Smart. 9 steals is more than impressive no matter who you are playing.

as for POY; A player stat sheet isn't going to look good when their team are killing opponents and not allowing them to stay in the game til the end. He played 19 mins against Miss Valley State.

Smart is only avg 13 pts and they're still averaging 105 points a game? WOW.

Just checked the stats, looks like He's only playing 22 minutes a game because they're killing everyone.

It amazes me how everyone thinks he sucks just because he plays at OSU. I'd take him in a heart beat

No one thinks Smart sucks. Some of do think he is an over hyped, flopping, cry baby.

No one has said he sucks. No one. But the hype surrounding him last season was ridiculous. The officials too often coddled him like he was Michael Jordan with three championships under his belt. An announcer calling the first Bedlam matchup in Norman, a game in which Smart contributed very little before fouling out, actually said on the air, as some kind of absurd defense of Smart's poor outing, that he was so good that he sometimes got bored during a game.

This in Smart's second conference game. No one yet knew how good Smart really was (not sure we know yet), but that didn't stop the hype.

Finally, he won the conference player of the year award, despite not having the best stats -- and if you're going to give that award to a freshman, he ought to be the clear choice. Blake Griffin's freshman stats compare very favorably with Smart's, but he wasn't seriously considered for the POY award that season (nor should he have been).

Smart's a quality player, and he may well become a great one. But the hype last season was over the top, and that will always foster resentment of a player (especially when the hype seems to carry over to the officiating).

Well said, Sky!

No one is questioning Smart's talent or skills. The point of this thread was to call attention to his stats through three games. They're not bad, but they're darned sure not worthy of POY honors. Players who win that award don't shoot 40% from the field, barely scratch 30% from three and turn the ball over with the frequency he has done to this point of the season.

And, for the record, he's averaging over 24 minutes per game. That's more than enough time to prove himself, especially against weak competition.

It seems the only people who consider Smart overhyped is the fans of opposing teams. If you look at what opposing coaches are saying you will get a completely different story. They are after all the ones who have to coach against him. I'm going to take their opinion over some guy who may have never seen him play in person.

Meh, this is not real argument. We have no idea what opposing coaches are actually saying. They ALWAYS say nice things about the other players. Chances are they'll talk about Buddy like he's a POY candidate for most of the year. He's not.

Smart is a very good player and you could argue that he is the most well-rounded player in the Big 12. Not many can stuff a state sheet the way he does. But he stuffs EVERY stat -- turnovers, shot attempts, silly fouls in addition to all the good stuff too.

He COULD be the player of the year, but he's still immature on the court. He's got to learn which shots to take, which passes to make, and when to step back and just defend rather than going for the steal.

That is the point. What is being said doesn't match up with the results. He needs to make some shots.Take his team somewhere. Accomplish something on the court. He is a good player with a decent stat line. Anything past that at this point is pure hype.
