If your son was a top 25 recruit and was being offered by basically all D-1 programs, headed to the NBA at some point unless he has a Tiny/TMG experience, would you recommend OU as his school of choice under Capel. Before you say look at Blake, lets just say no matter if he went to loser U the kid was going to be who he is today. He was already superman before he walked on Campus.

I would only recommend 2 Big 12 programs, KU and UT. Both are top 10 programs today, the daily competition will make you better, both coaches put kids in the NBA. Both coaches run great clean programs.

It pains me to not include OU. After watching the dismantling of hightly talented prospects under Capel I just can't do it.

What are your thoughts and why?

Hard to say that for sure. He certainly wasn't ranked in with the other "supermen" of the NBA when they were high school seniors. He wasn't even in the top 10 by most of the recruiting services.

As for me, basketball is a sport in which a kid can go to almost any school and shine. With the dance expansion talks, my statement rings even more true.

I'd have him go to whichever school he felt most comfortable with. It wouldn't matter to me if it was Alabama or Kansas. It will be his home for the next 1 plus years and I'd want him to make the decision based on relationships with his coaches and teammates over just going to an "elite school". The danger of going to the elite school is that you can get left out in the cold by other players and miss your chance at getting PT/exposure.

And I'd watch the KU "clean" statement. They are as dirty as anybody else.

I would never assume my kid was going to make it in the NBA and even if my kid did make it, I would assume he played 3 years or less. As a result, I would assume he had to get a college degree and recommend that he go to a school he liked. If he has the talent to make the NBA he will make the NBA.

1. recruit the best, fastest athletes
2. work on pressure defense and breaks from day one (a la Huggie)
3. profit

It is very hard to assume my kid would make the NBA, and I would prolly steer him to Duke if he could qualify. There he could learn from one of the best coaches ever, and get a very good education in case he doesn't make the NBA or gets hurt.

I'd look at OU if the situation was different and I assume you're meaning currently...well, no my son would never play for Capel, truth be told. If my son could go anywhere? The answer would be Duke, but that's selfishly admitting I'm a big Coach K fan. I'd look for character of the program...I don't like Texas (would never send my kids there, never), Roy Williams, Calhoun, Calipari, Pastner or Pitino, so that would narrow it down a little. So if it was up to me, his top 5 would be something like this - Duke, Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, Wisconsin...just a mock attempt.

Ok why wouldn't I realistically look at Capel and OU? Most of it's been documented endlessly on this board. Capel's team has no identity, heart or hustle and he doesn't seem to develop players very well. I'd argue that Blake played off of 100% talent while at OU and learned very minimally. Well besides how to dunk a ball. WW? Same thing. TMG? Same thing. Tiny? Same thing. So IMO, Capel doesn't know how to coach x's and o's nor does he know how to develop players...you can't send your kid to play for him unless he's a borderline talent and I'm talking about close to being D2. That pains me to say, because I loved Capel as a player and I love OU. So no, currently, I wouldn't send my son to OU unless a change is made.

You are missing the question. Would you recommend OU as a option with Capel as the coach if he could choose any school?

I would not.

Only 2 Big 12 teams would be in consideration, UT and KU.

When I mean clean I am referring to the kids staying out of trouble and actually getting a 4/5 year education. Unless they go to the NBA most of Bill's kids walk with a diploma and are very well rounded. Not referring to Bill's family relo packages.

Every program has a few issues I noticed Bill just suspended a player good for him.

Most top 25 recruits are considered locks for the NBA/super-human...that's why they are ranked so high.

I believe it's a myth that coaches make these players that much better. They DO instill certain fundamentals and allow them to mature, but let's face it, these kids are extraordinary athletes before the Self/Coach K/Capel's of the world get them. It's like the chicken/egg analogy.

Coaches are more/less only as good as the talent they have, or like KS, they completely try to change how the game is played by most to get the most out of their level of talent. KS was/is a GREAT coach, but his best teams had really good players too...

...but to answer your question...OF COURSE I WOULD. I'm a huge OU fan and donor. That's the part you kind of missed out on. Most recruits (I'm talking overall, not just top 25) go to a regionally close university. Some don't, but the vast majority do. A LOT of them have some sort of tie to the university they pick either via their parents or some other draw...

If my son was a top 20 recruit and a lock for the NBA draft, I would advise im to go play at Pepperdine. Great education, great campus, right on the water, and will be "the guy" and put up big numbers.

Would love for a kid of mine to go to OU and play, but with the present coaching staff I would have to insist that he go elsewhere.

Personally I think there was a lot of development in Blake between his freshman and sophomore seasons. Additionally to fail to recognize the difference in the development of Longar Longar under Capel and under Sampson is a failure to open your eyes. Ditto Taylor under Capel vs Sampson.

With both Longar and Blake the development could also be attributed to Coach Cline who is no longer with the program

What did Blake improve upon? Not arguing, just conversing. Longar did improve substantially and a lot that came with playing time.

This is a truly asinine post.

This is a truly asinine post.

Thanks. It's always fine to disagree. I think if a parent decides to let his son play for Capel, then that parent doesn't care about their kid's future. It's just my opinion anyways and if you disagree why not say what you disagree with instead of just saying it's asinine. Where am I wrong? Development? Heart? Hustle? Identity?

Please if you disagree so much, state why you would send your kid to Capel? We (some more than others and some KU,OSU, MU exceptions) all love OU or we wouldn't be on this board, but can you seriously say that you'd send your kid to OU just because it's OU?

Good post. :clap

If more posters on this message board could disagree without making it personal, what a much better place it could be (speaking to myself, too).

Some don't take it personal, they just send PM's asking to only post positive comments. :ez-laugh:

Of course I would send my son to play for Capel. Why would I not? Capel has proven he can win, he has at the mid-major and major college level, not to mention the international level. He has proven he can develop players into NBA draft picks.

He obviously has high character. He has a tremendous family. His players seem to care about him a great deal. He can obviously motivate guys to give their all despite the circumstances around them.

Your post is asinine because of comments like these:

This is why I would send my kid to play at OU for Capel, besides the fact I'm an OU alum and a big fan.

I would understand my son may not win as many games at OU with Capel as at other institutions, but I think Capel would be a good influence on him and help prepare him for life after college.

This is all given that my son is a morally sound kid (which he would be) and was mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong and is selfless as team members have to be.

If my son were lacking in these areas, then I'm not sure OU would be the best because I think Capel has a track record of not being able to "reign in" kids who are on the fringe, so to speak. However, I would still want him to go to OU anyway.
