I heard Rohde talking to Al about this on the radio last week. Rohde said something along the lines of "Yeah, he's having a great season, but he has a long way to go to be historic".

At this juncture, it unquestionably is.
The only two big guys that are even on his level over the past 20 years is Shaq and Tim Duncan. That's how you know Blake's season has been epic thus far.
I would have to say that I would take Tim and Shaq over Blake simply because they applied themselves on defense quite a bit more, but it is splitting hairs with each of them on offense.
At this juncture, it unquestionably is.

That's my biggest beef with Blake. I want him to get better on defense. He didn't get a very good foundation in that department here i'm afraid.

Yeah not to nitpick at Blake because he obviously has been extraordinary thus far as a rookie, but he could be so much better if he applied himself on the defensive end; he has the ability to be an outstanding defender.
I think once he realizes that in order to take his team to elite status he has to elevate his defense, he will do just that. Its much like LeBron: LeBron has always had the ability to be a stout defender, he just didn't start applying himself until the last couple of seasons. When he applied himself he became one of the best defenders in the league, and the Cavs then saw a dramatic improvement.
I think if Blake puts forth the effort he can emulate that same pattern.
