worse than it was when Capel was hired and we immediately lost 3 top recruits with NCAA probation on its way? The crazy thing about college basketball is, as dire as that situation was in Capel's first few months on the job (through no fault of his own), we were in the Elite 8 3 years later. Get a couple of players, and we're right back in the game competing. I think Capel is the man who can and will make that happen

I admire your enthusiasm. Let's play devils advocate. What has led you to believe that Capel is the right man to rebuild?

  1. Tough Defense?
  2. Offensive Ingenuity?
  3. Coaching out of a timeout?
  4. Recruiting?
  5. His low transfer/quit rate?

It's 50-50. He will either get us back on track or he won't. The 'will' could lead to great days ahead for all OU basketball fans. The 'won't' will lead to a new head coach. We just don't know right now what is going to happen.

There is an old saying, "no news is good news". I sure hope that's right because we have had a large helping of no news.

Yes because Capel inherited that situation, he created this one for himself. Whether he is as good at cleaning up his own mess than those that others create is the big ???. That said, I'm glad he is getting an opportunity to do, and I think that he can do it.

To me that is about as win-win as it gets...the absolute WORST thing for the long term stability of the program would be having an over-reactive AD with an itchy trigger finger. With the present approach, the WORST thing that can happen is that the fans suffer through one more bad year BUT we have a few talented recruits to build around. That is not a completely terrible downside.

I've been thinking the same thing...otherwise keeping this quiet is stupid.

Exactly! You are thinking just like me! I mean Capel is not a stupid guy, he went to Duke and was under coach K...and you almost have to figure coach K is giving him advice in this situation.....so if he does have good news the smartest thing is to just keep quite...then in the fiture noone should second guess him again

But if he has no good news then keeping quite is such a very stupid move...and I dont think Capel is a stupid guy...
We will find out alot about Capel in the next month whether he is right for OU or not

Who are these recruits (ace up the sleeve) going to be?? Even next year? We can't even sign a juco pt guard with no returning pt guard whatsoever.

I am not sure, it could be a combination of some good players to help out...maybe someone like thompson and ross with gallon coming back alongside another pg
That would give us a really solid lineup for next year

1) taylor
2) ross
3) clark
4) cade
5) gallon

Bench: fitz, thompson, pledger

as the season goes along maybe fitz or thompson works their way into the starting lineup and we run a traditional 3 out 2 in

Generally speaking, the term "ace up a sleeve" is a term intended to convey a big surprise that only one person knows they have; accordingly, when making a reference that Capel might have an ace up his sleeve regarding recruits, the implication is that we would not know who said recruits are.

...I guess it could also just be called wishful thinking as far as an 'ace up the sleeve' because this board does a great job of listing recruit targets and since, as you say, is someone we don't know, then it must be along the lines of a Sid Finch.

It could be wishful thinking, but the "ace up a sleeve" was thrown out as a speculative reason behind Capel's silence during a time when most think that he should be more vocal. Not sure that anyone said that Capel for sure had an "ace up his sleeve", I know that I certainly didn't.

I really think Capel has learned a tremendous amount of what it takes to lead a basketball team this season. He'll go back to the basics, work harder than ever, coach harder than ever, and go back to what got him all the wins at VCU and here the last few years.

For me, seeing those terms just ignites more frustration over this whole deal because I don't think those situations are real. I think a coach call pull one out of left field when things are going well and there is an attraction to become part of it. I have never seen us become so radioactive so quick and I am the voice of reason in my circle of fellow alums. This is the strangest thing ever.

And I'd add most frustrating thing ever.

If there is indeed a "gag order" that has been imposed, then the level of radioactivity in the media and with the fan base is solely at the foot of whom ever imposed it.

For a while I've been a little agitated over the level of negativity and speculation, but as of today, I completely appreciate where some of these folks are coming from.

We can't sign a point guard because we are down and competing with an elite program for him. Kids more than anything else (Including playing time) like to win. Losing sucks plain and simple. At Gonzaga Carter will compete for playing time, play in the tourney every year he is there, and WIN conference championships. At OU he didn't see that happening in the 2 years he has left.
