We currently average 30.5 boards per game according to statsheet.com. That is good for a tie for #322 in the country. There are 345 teams.

Does anyone remember a worse rebounding team at OU than this one?

A related question, have we ever had a smaller frontcourt?

Thank God we are 23 spots from the last!!!Go Sooners!!!!!

There's probably a couple teams under Kelvin that were just as small or smaller. They were more athletic and also Kelvin would play 2 forwards instead of a 4 guard line-up most of the time. 2004 comes to mind especially by the end of the year.

Johnnie Gilbert would be the biggest guy on this year's team.

Probably although not by as much as you think. He was about 6-7 or barely 6-8.

Kelvin's first couple of teams were real small. Ryan Minor was petty big but he was a guard at 6-6 or 6-7. But our post players were Abercrombie 6-4 and probably our best big, and Mayden at about 6-9. Yanish was about 6-10 and he only got about 12 minutes a game. I think Minor also played some as a post player that year too.

But in Kelvin's first couple of years his best rebounder was 6-4. And none of his big post players really put up that good of numbers. And you can say the same for OU's posts players in the Najera era. The best post player we really had was Najera at 6-7. Renzi Stone, Victor Avila, were big guys but didn't really do a ton if you look at the stats. Najera was our best post player. If Ryan Humphrey had stayed maybe things would have been different.

I went back 25 years and didn't see an OU team worse than this one.

Why did you stop at 25 years? Keep digging. We need to read some positive news that will give us hope for next season.

it MIGHT be the worst rebounding team since a peach basket (with a bottom) was used as the goal and the ref had to stop play after every bucket to get the ball.

OU women - 39.2
OU men - 30.5

You can't even rib the men and tell them they're playing like girls...

yes.

In 1989 and 90, we had William "Cheese" Davis who played center, and he was all of 6'5". Our forwards were Tony Martin, who may have been 6'7" and Jackie Jones, who was also 6'7". Damon Patterson was a forward as well and he was 6'7".

Cheese could rebound like nobody else though. He routinely outrebounded the big tall white stiffs from KU and MU. He was like a vacuum.

Rebounding isn't about height as much as it is about will/want-to, and getting physical by putting a body on somebody and pushing them out of the lane.

I was one of the smaller forwards (5'11") on my high school team but could out-rebound the guys who were 6-7 inches taller because I got a body on them. If they went over me, they usually were called for over the back. Fitz could do the same, but half the time he either jumps and doesn't put his hands up, or he stands still and puts his hands up. He has to learn to do both.

EDIT: just looked at the stats on soonerstats.com, and Cheese Davis averaged 8.5 rebounds per game his sr. year at 6'5".

This stat means absolutely nothing. Shorter shotclock, more possessions, more misses, etc.

What is our rebound margin? That stat is much more indicative or a good or bad rebounding team than rpg. A team could be the best rebounding team in the country and have a low rpg if they played at a slow pace and there were not as many possessions in a game.

I know. My comment was a pathetic attempt at a joke. Fail.

OU - 30.5 rpg
Opponents - 32.2 rpg

What did OU have in 1995. Abercrombie was not very big (he was effective). Who played with him in the paint? Was it Yanish? If so I guess they were bigger than this team.

So we've named two teams that may have been smaller over the last 20 years.

It's no surprise that one of the smallest teams in OU history is also one of the worst rebounding teams.

You can blame it on height if you wish, but our problem is the kids don't know how to rebound because the coaching staff doesnt put an emphasis on it, just like defense.

Neither Pledger nor Fitz care one iota about rebounding, and neither does Clark. When coach puts an emphasis on it and starts putting some butts on the bench, then maybe they will care about the boards.

Anything else is just an excuse.

Sometimes it's hard for me to imagine you actually believe some of the things you post.

No emphasis on rebounding? Players don't care about it?

I'm not 100% opposed to the idea of a new coach, but my God get a grip.

Size, or lack thereof, may keep this OU team from dominating the glass, but it's certainly not the reason we stink at it.

Rebounding is about effort, good team defense that leaves you in a position to rebound, and "toughness". This team struggles with all three of those things.
