It's not surprising

Team leader---I think Sherri has made it clear that the fire comes from Maddie, with a little from Sharane, Ritchie, and Peyton. It helps if the fire is from someone who is actually on the court. We may be forced to play Maddie earlier than we might otherwise.

Gabbi is doing better than we probably should have anticipated. Remember DRob as a freshman? She couldn't shoot, and she put a lot of passes in the fifth row. Gabbi has some learning to do. It is also difficult for a freshman to be forward enough to take the lead on the court. Sometimes, rarely, they do. It takes the right personality and fire.

From what has been said, I think we have to count on Maddie and Nicole Kornet providing most of the fire and leadership until Gabbi grows up a bit. LaNesia may have it, but she is a freshman, and that wasn't to have been her role. Even if we have to supplement her with a wheelchair, Maddie is essential on the court to light the fire. Only Nicole has the ability to do it otherwise, and Nicole wouldn't have the ball in her hands enough.

Guard---fire---Sherri became Stacy became..................

We all overrated Ortiz thinking she was going to be our immediate answer at point. She isn't. Maddie isn't physically capable of being our starting 1 or playing as long as a starting
point has to for is to successful. That leaves Edwards and LaNesia. I'd give both an extended opportunity starting tonight.

As for Little, there was a reason she was playing less and less at aTm and we now have all seen it. She isn't that good and she has less fire than Vegas did. I'd definitely start Kornet over her. I think Sherri believes she needs Nick to anchor the unit when she starts rotating in the subs.

Gabbi could solve one of her main problems with extensive practice - over & over - at what she does when she first comes across the center line. She has developed a habit of slowing - and often heading for one of the corners near center court. Other teams have figured that out and are attempting to come out and mover her that way - then they trap her there. Many of her turnovers have been caused like that.

There are several ways to coach her to avoid that - and some involve teaching other players to be prepared for that and provide easy quick pass options for her. That will often leave us with a 4 on 3 situation for a couple of seconds that could often turn into points.

Surely Sherri has seen that and will coach the team up on that. Tonight would be none to soon to see at least some attempt at it. These kinds of things - when they are seemingly not at all obvious to Gabbi - do require serious repetition in practice. If you have watched any of Lon's practices you know he spends lots of time going over and over the same situation. Then changes the possible response of the opponent and practices taking advantage of that - again - over and over.

Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Gabbi is required to do and know about 5 times the amount of things that she did in high school. She's learning now and there will be bumps in the road but none of the coaching staff is disappointed in Gabbi. They expect her to be an excellent point guard. That's part of the reason she's had trouble at the free throw line because she has so many things going on in head.

This team is full of youth and inexperience and will take them time to gel.
