James seeks to shake slump ahead of Bedlam | NewsOK

C. J. Is not going to shake his slump until he takes off the self-inflicted shackles. He's playing scared, thinking about everything he does instead of letting the game come to him naturally. He's passing on open shots from the perimeter that would have been automatic for him early in the season. Heck, he's not even ready to shoot when the ball comes his way.

The slump he's in is affecting every part of his game, from moving his feet on defense to ball control to his decision making. The only way he's going to break out of it is to keep shooting. But he has to do it in the flow of the game. It can't be part of the thought process he's going through now. He needs to shoot without any fear whatsoever of missing. That's not an easy thing to do when you're in a shooting slump.

There's a reason for the term sophomore slump.

Let's hope that's all this is

I'm dissappointed b/c he wasn't the player I thought he was. Maybe he will be as an upper classman. I've changed my tune from him being a legit all big 12 player to being a role player that is a sophemore averaging 9 ppg and shooting 40% from three on the year.

On most team, a young player putting up those numbers is pretty good.

I'm just wondering how many fricking articles the local media can write on this same subject ??
Dudes played bad all year, and they continue to act like he's on a two week skid or something .
I know ou basketball is down in the dumps right now but surely there is more to cover on the team then this.

You might want to look at the stats before you make claims with no basis in the facts. C J was shooting well over 50% from three in the first TEN games. How is that playing bad all year?

Outside of Wisconsin (11 points), the competition faced those first 10 games is not what it is compared to the Big 12. I like CJ, I'm just not convinced he can keep up against Big 12 competition as of right now.

It seems pretty clear that the Wichita State game was when his season took a turn for the worse. He had a terrible shooting game that day and hasn't been able to get his shot on track since. That happens, even to good shooters. What worries me more than the misses is shot selection. There are times when he turns down quality shots, and other times when he forces a contested shot early in the clock. On those occasions, it almost seems like he has decided to shoot before he gets the ball, regardless of how closely guarded he is. Lattin is similar in that regard -- there are usually at least a couple times per game when you know a shot is going up before he even catches the pass.

The thing that I loved most about James last year was that he understood his role and always found a way to contribute in limited minutes by defending and rebounding. In the postseason, when he played a bigger role off the bench, he was confident and ready to shoot when open. I trust that he will get back to that at some point, which is why Lon keeps giving him minutes. Painful in the short term, but hopefully will pay off down the road -- much like how Cousins improved over the course of his career.

What, two a game?

Hell some 4s and 5s are probably shooting 50% for the season and are probably 2 for 4 for the season.

Again James has been bad the whole season .

The media can write 50 articles about his coming out of the slump just as long as he gives them the material to do such.

Doesn't look like they will run out of things to write about .

I would do some research into Lon's record in 5 point games .

It's way way way past time to call this a slump. He just isn't very good, much like the entire roster.

It has taken me a while, but, I'm now convinced these players and team are just not good. I hate to say they are bad basketball players, but, very close to that.

Woodard is a great big 12 player
Mcgusty is all big 12 talent
Doolittle is all big 12 talent
Odomes is big 12 role player
James is big 12 role player
Lattin is below big 12 talent
Mcnease is below big 12 talent
Freeman tbd
Shepard tbd
Strong Moore below big 12 talent

Next year is going to be rough

I was in the exact same boat you were in early on in the season, but I started having doubts after the Northern Iowa meltdown.
Teams with so called "talent" don't blow 20 point leads, miss layups, miss free throws, don't defend the three, don't box out on rebounds, commit unforced turnovers multiple times a game, and then there's the offensive identity or lack thereof.

The northern Iowa game was still early on and completely understandable
