Jenni Carlson doesn't like it...

Jenni is not a great writer, but most of the people who love to bash her couldn't do her job any better.

So she's better than the general public, that's a heck of an endorsement but I have higher standards for sports writers of major newspapers. This isn't communist China!! :)

No, she is better than a lot of people who think they know how to do her job better than she does.
I have higher standards, too. I just get bored with people who think they can do someone else's job better. Maybe it is just because I work in journalism. I hear people tell me all the time they could make the photos I make if they had "a camera like that". The reason I have "a camera like that" is because I demonstrated skill before I had "a camera like that".
It's not an easy thing to write interesting content on deadline. I'm not implying that she is great, but she is better than so many of her critics.

no where did I say it was a bad hire, it was a good hire considering the circumstances. I wouldn't call it an amazing hire.

Maybe it is just because you work in journailsm. But then again I have a journalism degree and work for a publishing company so as someone who deals with people's writing on a daily basis, I feel qualified.

We're not all just unqualified jerks. Some of us are qualified jerks. :)

You will notice that I didn't single anyone out. Frankly, I think I could do her job better than she does, and I bet you could, also. Regardless, many of the people who think she is a hack, can't complete 3 paragraphs of anything more than rambling twaddle.

My perception has long been that Ms. Carlson is held to a higher standard by some on this board than her male peers. That story made its point well enough, and it was a valid, if fairly obvious, one. Am I prepared to nominate her for a Pulitzer? Hardly, but then I wouldn't submit the names of any other OKC or Tulsa sportswriters, either.

I would say Carlson's on a par with Tramel and Sittler and the rest. None of them are terrific writers; they're all pedestrian. Not awful, but hardly great.

I think Emig is better than the average of the names you mentioned.

Tramel is the best pure writer on the Oklahoman's entire staff IMO. Of any department at the paper.

Jenni's not my favorite, for various reasons, but I endorse shooterms' view. The internet is littered with blogs of people who thought they had something to say but ran out of ideas after the first six posts.

Rude gus! I didn't run out of ideas. I was just too lazy to keep posting to my blog.

I think Tramel has his moments, and perhaps I judge him too harshly when he lays an egg. I do, often, enjoy his missives.
With that I should mention that my two favorite writers on this board, Skyvue and Tony, more or less agreed with me. This made me smile (this, and my cigar and beer).

If you actually sit down and read the article, it isn't that bad. She says Kruger is a good coach and a good fit for the program, but he isn't likely to generate as much buzz as some of the other candidates we pursued. I'm happy with the hire, but it's not like the article is outrageous.

You're still the tops in my book!

What a nice thing to say, thanks. I agree that skyvue is the man.

The only thing that bugs me about Tramel is when he tries to hammer home some new nickname for something. Berry: "Boomers" is not going to catch on. Time to let it go!

yes, but how many of those blog writers had a staff of 15+ kicking around column/story ideas? anyway, i have no problem with her. and i like that she comes from a different place than other 50-year old white male columnists. also why i appreciate the jason whitlocks and michael wilbons. i just think she was given something she didn't really earn. how old was she when berry gave her the column gig?

tramel likens himself to and tries to come off as some sort of sterilized hunter s. but he doesn't have near the talent.

It's a totally fair point. I'm definitely talking more about columns than news stories or features; I just think it's so hard to consistently come up with new/interesting takes on stories. Far too often you end up with people relying on the same old tired cliches or saying something for the sake of being controversial. What I like about Tramel is that even if I don't agree with him I feel like he's coming from a point of view and has given the issue some real thought.

Not sure if Jenni got hired right out of college or not, but you are right, she was really young. I have no idea why, but I remember her very first column for the Oklahoman. It was an "email" to her parents talking about how she moved to Oklahoma. It was weird. Not sure why I remember that.

Who is your favorite sportswriter, red recluse?
