If the racial stuff didn't get her, the only hope there is the donor/alumni base.
A number of very prominent people have supported Sherri, including bigshot business, political leaders and prominent women. They are going to have to pull back, lose interest, or decide she's doing the program more harm than good for Joe to get the balls to force her out or fire her.
He might just be too gutless to pull the plug on a Hall of Fame coach. It took Coke and machine guns for the university bosses to get rid of Switzer, remember.
However, I think we could find a solid replacement. It's going to take 4-5 years to rebuild this program once she's gone anyway.
However, when you sit back and analyze this, even from a distance, it certainly seems bizarre and a sign of significant failure that Joe C. hasn't moved on this already.
I will ask a question of all you folks. Can any of you remember when a failing OU coach of any sport or sex has been give a decade to turn a program around without being fired? Or for that matter of any sport at any major university?
I cannot think of one.
I cannot find the records or a list of former coaches by sport when I attempt to google for the info. But having followed Sooner sports for close to 60 years and OU women's sports since there inception it is my observation the OU's posture on the minor sports is to allow them to suffer with losing records for many years and then every decade or so high a replacement coach but never a top national coach in the sport but instead a hopeful up and comer they can put on the staff for close to minimal dollars. The one exception I can think of is Ryan Hybl, OU men's golf coach but even after winning a natty only makes $197K with perhaps some bonuses.
Should a minor sports coach have major national success for multiple years and the Sooners will pay top dollar as they do Patty Gasso (approximately $1 million) twice what any other softball coach makes at a top national school. Texas' Mike White make $450K plus bonus that likely approach $100K for about $550K. Florida's Tim Walton makes $470K.
For certain there was no need to pay Patty $400K more than her nearest competitor but because of press Joe C. wrote her a big check. However Mark Williams with 9 national championships at OU is paid only $300K and K.J. Kindler with 4 national championships is paid $450K.
From my perspective the difference in softball vs gymnastics TV revenue does not warrant a pay differential of $500K-$650K more than that of Kindler and Williams.
