Jon Gillon eyeing OU for transfer

At OU when has Kruger used 3 guards to play point? If OU signs Gillon then I bet Strong either doesn't play or is used at the 2 only. My guess is that he doesn't play bc he would have to beat out James, McGusty, or Grandstaff.

Pretty much every year that he's had his own recruits.
2012-13: Grooms/Cousins/Hornbeak - 1 PG/2 combo guards
2013-14: Woodard/Cousins/Hornbeak - 1 PG(Woodard at the time)/2 combo guards
2014-15: Woodard/Cousins/Walker - 3 combo guards
2015-16: Cousins/Woodard/Walker - 3 combo guards

I agree that if Gillon signs, I don't see Strong seeing much time. James, McGusty, and Grandstaff will all see minutes between the 2 & 3 spots along with Odomes. I feel like someone is going to have to redshirt.

Maybe 3 ball handlers is the best way to put it.

Maybe his 1st year but Cousins was terrible at ball handling. The next year he never played point. Walker was never used as the pg either year or even as a secondary ball handler. Jury is still out on Strong but if he can play point this would be the 1st time, and if Gillon comes strong won't play unless he can beat out a wing.

If Lon Kruger wants to bring in Gillon then I want him, too. My only concern has to do with attitude. He and his CSU coach, Larry Eustachy, openly clashed last season even during games. He is a speedy guard but not a great outside shooter. I'm not concerned about who starts but I do care who will be in the 8-9 man rotation by the end of the season...... probably 5 guards/wings (Woodard, James, and 3 others)...... Choose between McGusty, Grandstaff, Odomes, Strong, and Gillon?

Here's a theory about having 3 PG on the roster. Darrion Strong hurt his shoulder and was supposed to have surgery at the end of the season. I had read that he had a couple of months before he could start practicing again. He has a redshirt year available, so maybe he could rehab and learn the system while redshirting. I've not read any updates on him since the season ended so I'm just guessing.

Ya i think that injury is concerning us.. I'm scared of gillons attitude too.. but i guess we could boot him.. booker was a problem and we survived that..

I want the guy. I love 5th year transfers! Instant eligibility, little commitment from us and they are desperate to succeed.

I think the attitude thing is being blown out of proportion some. Eustachy is an intense character. I think between our staffs approach and his status as a grad transfer (his last shot), it would be a non-issue...

Jordan is staying at the 2. We need another point guard.

I prefer him at the 2, doesn't get worn down handling the ball bin a smaller guy. Always better to have 2 proven ball handlers on the court.

yeah but his game explodes when he decides to get the lane. We saw it at the end of games. The more he has the ball in his hands the better imo. especially with younger guys getting big minutes next year

If we get Gillon, he probably needs to play the 2 50% of the time and Strong can redshirt if he is not ready.

You don't redshirt juco players. We redshirted Bennett and he wasn't even playing towards the end of his senior year. IF you have to redshirt him, then we don't need him.

Woodard was a better off-guard but remember he was guarded by the other team's third best perimeter defender. Next year, he will be guarded by the other team's best.

hes good at both. I prefer the ball in his hands.. but he has lost a full year being a 1 now.. he would probably slide back in effortlessly, but I think what we do is not worry about 1s and 2s and obviously just put our best guards out there.

Let JW be a 1 and 2 guard out there. sometimes have him bring it up, esp on presses. go ISO with JW at the top when there is a reset some or run a set with him running off screens and catching passes off them- shooting and attacking the rim

Kruger isnt offering starting jobs. Those are earned. He's offering a opportunity to play for OU. If he starts then, hes earned it.

I doubt he has seen him live very much.

I know that...figured most folks on here would understand that he sees him as a pretty productive player or contributor or he wouldn't offer. Guess I should have been more specific.

I would think since we have a juco PG basically the same mold, that he thinks Gillon can offer more sooner.

I suppose the argument could be made it's no skin off our nose...have the ship, only used 1 yr...why not but I don't think a coach at a D1 would offer a kid just to "use the ship" if he didn't think he could contribute effectively quickly.
