Josh Richardson - Edmond Santa Fe

Not asking him to pull a scholarship, all for the university honoring it for four years once the NLI has been signed.

Initially offering him a scholarships is the decisiion I am questioning.

I tend not to question coaches with Lon's track record. I think you should take the same position.

We have a lot college basketball coaches on this forum! A lot know more than the guy leading our team... :facepalm

Isn't that the truth! How the heII did we ever get Capel when we had all this coaching talent in our own back yard???

I love Lon...nothing wrong with saying a scholarship might not have been warranted for a fringe Big XII player.

Wrong. Mankin and Cole play different positions. They use Mankin on the wing and Cole as a post. The new walkon is not projected to ever be of any help.

Mankin is a nice player. He could probably be inserted into the game in short spurts and not do anything to get you beat. However he has a low ceiling. He is not going to get better. That is typical of walkons. That is what makes them a walkon. It is the same with another walkon. Trey. He is a really nice guard. The best practice gym 3 pt. shooter. He will never play an important minute.

CJ looked like a HS kid on a college team last season. This year he looked like a typical freshman on a college team. He is getting better. He has a higher ceiling than the walkons. He will be better again next season. Going forward he has a chance to play important minutes before he is done. The walkons do not.

Last Tuesday CJ was scoring at will over Spangler and Bennett. He doesn't do that often and Spangler and Bennett heard about it. On his best days, CJ is tons better than the walkons.

I didn't know they had to play the same position for one to be considered better than the other. I do not attend the practices as you do so I can not say who looks better in practice so I can just go off the videos for the new kid, so I can't speak on him too much. However, in the preseason and mop up time Mankin looked much better, to me, than Cole.

He's also not a walk-on...which is what the conversation was centered around.

Every player cant be a gut that contributes every single night... I know you see that as a waste of scholly but its true.

APR, Team chemistry, GPA, etc...

There are guys like CJ on every roster that earn a scholarship.

I remember the conversation from back then. Todays conversation is that Cole isn't as good as the walkons.

thats one of the conversation's tangents, but i think the REAL conversation is that cole was a wasted scholly.. which is something i agree with..

There is one other consideration. It is available minutes. It would be impossible to keep 13 legit Big 12 talents happy. Unhappy players transfer.

I think that the staff wants to sign another player in the late period that is good enough to play right away. If they do that, and even if they redshirt Mcneace, that will leave 10 players that are good enough to be in the game right now. Some of those guys won't be happy about their playing time.

Every coach needs enough really good players. But, if they have too many, issues arise.

You guys are just questioning our STAFF which just makes me laugh...

Go look at the 16 remaining team and tell me they dont have a CJ Cole on their roster. I just checked Fla's and they do, so lets fire Billy D!

Couldnt say it better myself! Thanks Gary!

that would be true if ALL of the players were in the same class... you get players that contribute later on in their careers all of the time..

ya the potential player may have transferred but so what? you got a shot at a player with a real D-1 ceiling and you try another fit with the now opened scholly-- as opposed to a player that MAY contribute at best, tyler neal minutes as a senior

where would this team be without Neal? Youre saying he's not important? You're making this argument easy!

Now you're just being ridiculous...completely missing the forest for the trees.

We just gave up 38 points in the paint to a 12 seed because there aren't enough bodies to provide depth at the 4-5 position. It is not unreasonable to question why that scholarship wasn't used to provide help.

But hindsight is 20/20, now that he's here, the university needs to honor his scholarship.

thats not what i said at all.... :facepalm

roll players are the differences in wins.. i said that cole's best hopes is to be tyler neal and i doubt he gets remotely close to that..

If Cole can be Tyler Neal his senior year I will be extremely happy and make a thread titled "I eat pieces of crow for breakfast/Gary dominated me like Cole does the frat boys"

i would too-- however, tyler neal contributed beyond just his senior year.. wished Neal had redshirted--especially his sophomore year or whichever when his minutes dipped to like 4 minutes a game
