Capel is getting a pass in years 1, 4, and 5... is that correct?

Year 1 because there wasnt a lot of talent and the recruiting class was gone.

Year 4 because none of the guys were team players and didnt care about the program so there was nothing Capel could have done to win (his words).

Year 5 because OU returns 3 players and has struck out on all top targets except for TJ and Cam. It is not reasonable to expect a good season next year.

Therefore, Capel gets a "pass" from the fans for these seasons, right? He is only responsible for years 2 and 3, from what I have gathered.

Dude, have you been on the board in the last six months? (I know you have) Capel has been getting killed. I'd say it's about 60/40 on whether people want him to stay or be fired.

A free pass? I think not.

Bout as clear as mud. If by fans you mean the fauna of this forum then he hasn't gotten a "pass" any of those years unless by pass you mean "OK we won't march on Castiglione's office with pitch forks and torches."

Capel got plenty of criticism in year one just for being who he was (yeah he got lots of props) but getting a pass didn't happen, nor did it happen in year four, just go back and peruse this board for the last two months. That's a pass?

Capel hasn't gotten a pass for year five because year five hasn't happened. It could turn out to be more of season four or season one but it might not.

Now some folks say he has two more years but from what I have read that seems to be a parameter expected from Joe C's office, not from the fans.

I will grant that Capel got a pass from the fans for this last season if and only if the number of butts in the seats does not go down next year. It won't happen.

No reason to give him a pass in his first season, IMO. I view that year as basically successful, and I'm not sure it's reasonable to have expected a much better season given the circumstances.

Jeff Capel absolutely does not get a pass in season 4, and I reject the notion of the impotent coach that is prevalent here. He categorically deserves the lion's share of the blame for that joke of a season.

Now, season 5 is a bit more tricky to me. We are going to be bad next season. But if we decided to bring him back after this past season, we do it with the full knowledge of what next year is going to be like. So while he is responsible for leading us to the situation we're in heading into 2010-11, I think it's fair to adjust expectations accordingly and base our assessment of Coach Capel's job performance next season on those.

Seasons 2 and 3 were unqualified successes and Jeff Capel deserves credit for those.

No, the board should reflect clearly that he gets a pass for years two and three because Griffin played himself on 5 for every game, and he lives beneath LNC and would have committed to OU if Beelzebub were coach.

He's only responsible for the bad years and this team is lame until Tubbs returns from his overwhelming successes at Lamar to lead us back to the promised land.

Capel gets a PASS on nothing.Reality says patience is required to build a top program. Rality says Capel inherited a mess image-wise when he took over a basketball program that had been placed under NCAA invetigation by the former coach's willful breaking ofthe rules.Reality says that Capel inherited a mess talent-wise when he got here with 3 members of a recruiting class bolting ,a fourth leaves zero impact on the program because of academic and injury issues.Reality says 16-15 wasn't bad for year one.

Apparently year two (23-12) and three (30-6 ELITE EIGHT escaped your notice.Year Four reality really bit as players came in reading their press clippings instead of working to become a team.Capel benched and suspended players repeatedly and enforced numerous other punitive measures to motivate, all to no avail.Capel is the coach and he accepts the failure of this season as his failure, where is the pass?
As for season Five who said there is a pass?Capel has to recruit, mold ,and coach next year to the best of his ability.Likewise the players have to do their part.

Given what Jeff has done thus far in his carrer(161 wins in 8 years,82 wins in four years at OU) Joe C.,the OU administration ,and all clear thinking OU fans feel confident next year will be much better. In the real ity shi.t happens, you trust those you have chosen for a job and you let them do their job.If that is giving someone a pass than I guess Jeff is deservedly getting one.

So our image and talent has gotten alot better in his 5th year? lol, how many years does it take to get the talent and image thing cleared up?

Abd,

I think you are pretty much correct in your assesment (though I am not sure how you are just now figuring this out).

IMO:

- Coach Capel and his staff will have a "pass" next year in the sense that the team will not be expected to go to the dance. It will be a year to start over and learn from mistakes made. The guys will be expected to play as a team, work hard, and keep their noses clean off the court. The only way I see him getting canned would be if we see the same discipline problems or we see a lack of effort on the court. In short, I think we will look like one of the recent Indiana teams next year (hopefully with a few more wins).

- Year 6 will be the time that this team will be expected to get back to the dance and get back to the level that is expected for Oklahoma basketball. It will be vitale that the staff signs an impact big man and another scoring guard during the 2011 class. It doesn't have to be Roc Christmas and LeBryan Nash, but it needs to be a couple of guys that can fill it up and help Cam and the boys compete again in 2011-12.

In my opinion of course these guys are going to play hard and be there for the team! I mean we really have no burger boys to coach. A good coach is able to put a leash on the talented guys and make them play as a team...So I dont see how seeing this next year means capel is ready to coach elite talent....When he gets a few top elite talented guys and bring them in and teach them how to play together I will be a believer...but next year will show me nothing in terms of beign able to do that.

Do we just kick every guy off the team every year that is not a team player coming out of highschool? No we cant! we have to find a coach who can reign those guys in...capel hasnt shown yet that he has that ability to "teach a wild horse" how to be saddled

ABD, I like you, but this is a pointless thread.

Is it?

You guys hang out?

lol, no.

I think you are pretty much correct in your assesment (though I am not sure how you are just now figuring this out).

Well now that Tiny is gone expectations are much different, and I know most gave him a pass for year 1 and now for last year because of the team problems. So to put it in perspective he has gotten a pass 3 out of 5 years at OU.

What does "gotten a pass" mean? Year 5 hasn't yet happened, so how can you say he has gotten a pass?

Are you saying that Capel has not gotten enough blame for years 1 and 4?

I'm still confused how Capel got a "pass" for year one. He, actually, exceeded my expectations in year one. Year 4 was an abject disaster that was largely Capel's fault. I can only assume that you believe that anyone that doesn't think he should be fired is giving him a pass.

Is it?

lol, no.

ABD his first season showed a lot of promise on a team with little to no talent. They relied on a 6'4 post player for points. Yes this past season is rough and if the next season goes the same way he should probably get fired. So i am not sure what free pass you are speaking of. Clearly you have an agenda.. When is the TU coach coming off his pass
