Key to beating Baylor

Absolutely terrific defense by Gabbi and jones still buries a 3 at the end of the shot clock. Siiiiiigh

yeah, Baylor plays very physical... every time it goes into the paint with KK, a mugging happens.

Does women's basketball not have a 5 second closely-guarded rule? We should have gotten one on that last if so!

The officials allowed a very physical game, which favors Baylor. Ask Little how physical the Bears play...

Gabbi "Score 10 give up 30" Ortiz lol.

In all seriousness, thats about what I expected. We didn't play well, they deserve credit for making that happen. Tough to win there, but we proved we can play with them at full strength. Watch for TT's minutes to increase- she is really figuring it out.

Maddie had a bad shooting night. Peyton finished strong. Gabbi made a lot of mistakes to go with 14 points. T'Ona was brilliant, except that she kind of created a turnover situation when we got within three, and she got too far under on a fastbreak, attempting to pass it to Peyton on a bailout. Went where Peyton wasn't, and they were. Wonder what would have happened if she had pulled it out and run the offense, trying for two or three to tie.

When Kay Kay is 5 for 13, we lose. We can't miss that many close-in shots. But, we kept trying to shoot over them inside. Bad choice. We were finally hitting from outside. Make them guard you outside to get the pressure off inside.

Ten points? Could have been worse. Good time for Jones to show up in Waco. I think we take them in Norman..

1. We played out of control much of the first half. I thought we played a little faster than we are capable of playing.

2. The best game I've seen T'ona play as a Sooner.

3. Baylor is more athletic than we are which was a large factor in the outcome.

4. We knew we had to rebound and prevent second chance points...we could not do so.

5. Maddie couldn't score.

6. It appears Sherri and Kim get along just fine.

7. I thought overall we played about as well as can and I don't feel bad at all. Learn from it. Work hard. Get ready for the next game.

Maddie took good shots, if she does that the rest the year she will bust out of her slump and be a key factor down the stretch. Thought she played great otherwise, not sure why she sat so much.

Good to see Peyton scoring again, wasn't sure if the first part of the season was a fluke- she proved it was just a slump tonight.

Maddie sat because her defense was not good. Sherri was trying to find someone who could guard Davis. Unfortunately, we just don't have anyone. Not sure other teams do either.

I think Maddie was playing decent defense, and she was rebounding well, about the only one who did other than Kay Kay. She also got four steals. She was only on Davis during a couple of switches that I saw, one of which they commented that Davis missed because Maddie got a hand in her face. But, I think Maddie was trying too hard to shoot and was taking off-balance shots. She took an eight-footer that was a foot to the right of the rim, wasn't facing the rim when she released.

I'm sick and tired of reading this same post the last 4 years.

The complete failure to sign an Amanda Thompson type player the last 5 years is baffling.

As our back court gets bigger next year, it wouldn't shock me if Ortiz minutes went down some.

No Norm.

Being as this has been an on going topic of discussion I watched it very closely today.

Treece gave up 5-7 pts while guarding her and when in the game, she was attacked- but honestly, theres no way to expect her to stay with Nina and not a great matchup.
Maddie gave up around 2-3 buckets (w much more playing time) in a man to man situation- the rest were in transition which obviously, nobody is really guarding her. I did see one play where maddie was slow to get out on her because she looked tired, and she was pulled the next play other than that I thought she played great d.

And lets just be honest, Ortiz just can't stay with these people.

They weren't going to Niya Johnson down the stretch. They weren't going to Nina Davis. They weren't going to their height advantage, they were going after gabbi. The other play was a pick and roll w/ Wallace and Nina Davis, hoping for a switch of Peyton on to Nina or Wallace getting a look by Peyton going under. That was fairly consistent, especially when things go close.

Have they even tried?

I believe it was Mac who told us a few months ago that Jones was going to help Baylor. She was really good today!

I did not feel bad about this outcome. Disappointed, yes. But not frustrated.

It was a 10 point game on their court. The key was that they had a player (Jones) who produced more than she normally has been able to produce. And no BU player had an off game shooting.

Think about us. Yes, TT played very well and better than expected - but she was only in the game about 16 minutes. Not a single starter played up to their potential. And one - Maddie - had a difficult game. What if just one of our players had had one of those special shooting nights - or scored double her season average (like Jones did). We would have very likely won - on their court. You must have that to win on the road against an excellent team - or have them have a really poor shooting night.

Maddie was not pulled due to weak defense. After getting so far behind we needed to find someone who could hit shots - and it was just not her night. But at the end when we HAD to have defense - and also scoring - Maddie was on the court.

I also noticed once again that Davis fouls far more than is called. If you recorded the game go back to the 1:54 mark of the 4th quarter. Nina fouled Maddie badly not once but twice - causing her to miss a short jumper. Some are saying Maddie shot poorly - and at times she did - but in some cases it was fouling that caused it. Maddie makes a double move completely turns Nina, then in trying to recover Nina runs, jumps, and hits Maddie. Remember that impeding the movement of a player is a foul - no discussion needed - this is a textbook video of that kind of foul. Maddie still gets up for the shot - and lo and behold - Nina hits her arm - hard- - during the shot. But none of that is called.

Or look at the 1:40 mark of the same quarter. Nina shoves Maddie to get room, then after Nina gets the ball, Johnson uses an obvious moving screen on Maddie to free Nina up. Then when Maddie breaks through the screen, and Nina has to pass the ball anyway, Nina sets another likely moving screen on Gabbi. Brian Enterline is watching all of this - but he simply will not call a foul on Baylor. But in all that Maddie never let Nina get a shot off. Maddie was not pulled due to playing bad defense.

+1

We played good at times but bad at times too. I think the whorns may sweep Hypocrite U this year. We just have to become more consistent. Hypocrite U isn't a top 4 team either. They should be around #10. I realize they will drop due to losing to the Pokes but I doubt if they drop to where they belong. Big 12 champ will most likely have 3 or 4 losses this year.....
