I did not feel bad about this outcome. Disappointed, yes. But not frustrated.
It was a 10 point game on their court. The key was that they had a player (Jones) who produced more than she normally has been able to produce. And no BU player had an off game shooting.
Think about us. Yes, TT played very well and better than expected - but she was only in the game about 16 minutes. Not a single starter played up to their potential. And one - Maddie - had a difficult game. What if just one of our players had had one of those special shooting nights - or scored double her season average (like Jones did). We would have very likely won - on their court. You must have that to win on the road against an excellent team - or have them have a really poor shooting night.
Maddie was not pulled due to weak defense. After getting so far behind we needed to find someone who could hit shots - and it was just not her night. But at the end when we HAD to have defense - and also scoring - Maddie was on the court.
I also noticed once again that Davis fouls far more than is called. If you recorded the game go back to the 1:54 mark of the 4th quarter. Nina fouled Maddie badly not once but twice - causing her to miss a short jumper. Some are saying Maddie shot poorly - and at times she did - but in some cases it was fouling that caused it. Maddie makes a double move completely turns Nina, then in trying to recover Nina runs, jumps, and hits Maddie. Remember that impeding the movement of a player is a foul - no discussion needed - this is a textbook video of that kind of foul. Maddie still gets up for the shot - and lo and behold - Nina hits her arm - hard- - during the shot. But none of that is called.
Or look at the 1:40 mark of the same quarter. Nina shoves Maddie to get room, then after Nina gets the ball, Johnson uses an obvious moving screen on Maddie to free Nina up. Then when Maddie breaks through the screen, and Nina has to pass the ball anyway, Nina sets another likely moving screen on Gabbi. Brian Enterline is watching all of this - but he simply will not call a foul on Baylor. But in all that Maddie never let Nina get a shot off. Maddie was not pulled due to playing bad defense.
