Kornet was interviewed on the Stoops radio show and said a couple of interesting things. First, she said that she has been working at the 4, but can also play outside. With regard to this issue, who here thinks she would be our best 4?

Second, she was asked which of the freshman would likely be in the rotation, and she said Carter for sure and then waffled on the rest. Although she did mention Kellogg as well. I sort of thought Carter would be a key element of the team by conference, and the perception of the returning players is that she can play. So, maybe I will right for the first time.

After watching Nicole during the last few games of last year and seeing the one practice on TV, I think she's going to play a pivotal role in this team this year. She seems to be a pretty good offensive rebounder and then put the ball back up for 2. Her Dad played in the NBA and I would bet she worked very hard over the summer to improve. She has good size, pretty good quickness for that size and a great outside shooter. If she can improve the defense even more than she did during the year, and I could see good improvement from the beginning of the year until the NCAA, she can and will be a huge part of this team this year. I'm excited to see her play!

I like this move… Kornet doesn’t have great foot speed and keeping up with some of the guards around the country or the big 12 could be a little difficult for her. She isn't shy to shoot and this could be an advantage for us on offensive, most bigs don’t like to play out on the perimeter, she could pull up for easy 3 point looks until teams start to adjust. Kornet is a great young lady and I’m sure she is the ultimate team player; this is an example of doing what’s best for the team.

I thought this was likely given her height and that she can provide the 3 pt shooting that Sherri loves at the 4. Of course the question is playing defense and rebounding vs bigger power forwards...one of the interesting questions to be answered as the season plays out.

Well, those of us who figured it might be Maddie at the 4 should not be surprised at Kornet, who played the 3/4 a bit last year.

She doesn't have the speed or quickness that Sharane has, but she is bigger and taller.

I still think Sharane get's the first shot at the 4. I just don't think Sherri is going to keep her out of the starting line-up as long as she plays like she did last year.

I would think Maddie gets the first shot at the 3, but who knows? Maybe Maddie plays the 3/4 too. I still think that's possible -- especially the 3.

Starting line-up is going to be very interesting. When's the open practice? Friday at 6?

I expected Kornet to be a 3-4 this year. How much she plays at each probably depends on two others who will be 4-5 Kaylon, 4 Shaya, maybe Gibbs, probably Portia.
I think of Maddie as a 1-4, and I figure that if she is what she was at the time of her injury, she will probably be a rover as others fit into their roles. I can see her spelling Morgan, Aaryn, Sharane, or Kornet.

I didn't even notice Gioya at the first televised practice. Kornet was everywhere, as was, I think, Derica. At times, I had difficulty distinguishing Peyton and Derica, and the announcers were no help at all.

I have a hard time imagining a situation in which Sharane does not start. I suspect her position will be at SF. It looks like the big question is, who starts at the 4.

BTW, kornet said that the teams versatility would probably be its strength, e.g. a lot of the girls can play multiple positions. In fact, she specifically mentioned Maddie and said she was a 6'2 point that can play a lot of positions.

Just thinking about it since the show, she might be right. There is a lot of versatility on this team. Kornet, Maddie, Campbell and I think Carter, can all play a lot of positions, and Kornet, Maddie and Campbell can play both inside and out.

Griffin, Portia, Williams and (I assume) Gibbs inside. Mo, AE, Maddie and (I assume) carter and Edwards can play point. All the point guards and Kornet Maddie and Campbell can play outside, or slide inside if necessary. I guess we will see, but maybe Kornet will work solely inside.

All in all, we do seem versatile and deep. It will be interesting to see how the minutes shake out. If we stay health, it could be a big year. Key players for me are Nicole Griffin and KK. If we are good inside, we should be good.

I agree. And Nicole didn't say she would start. We will need quality backups for every position and I think this year, talent wise, may be our deepest team ever. I believe Nicole G and KayKay, and maybe Felisha, will be played strictly at the 5 except maybe for special situations. Sharane, Nicole K, Portia and Shaya will be at the 4, with Sharane and Nicole K occasionally sliding over to the 3, depending on the situation. Morgan and T'Ona will be PGs. All the others will probably be 2s and 3s with Maddie having the versatility to play 1 through 4 although will probably start at the 3. I really like the potential versatility of this team. I really think Nicole G is the ONLY player on this team that is locked into 1 position all across the roster. The new players that rise to the top this year will be those that can play defense, or at least improve as the season goes along, and those that can score pretty consistently. Barring injuries, I think if these new players come ready to give it their all, this team will be a Top 10 team by early to middle conference season. We may not be ranked in Top 10 at that time but I think our play will be of a Top 10 team. Ready to get this season going!

Total minutes Minutes by freshmen
It looks like freshmen will average about 20% of all the minutes played if form holds.

The 20% works when some freshmen start at some point during the year like Aaryn, Griffin, Whitney, Kornet, Morgan, Sharane, etc. I doubt that happens this year.

The only two years in which we did not see 20% were the two years in which we had only two freshmen (Cloman and McFarland, Kornet and Manning), and we had the loss of one due to injury one of those.

2012 24.9%
2011 31.8%
The rest of the time, it is right at 20%. Freshmen are usually needed for depth, and I think they will be again.

With our numbers and interchangeability of parts we should be able to run the opposition into the ground. This year I'm not on the edge of my seat worrying about injuries so much. (Maybe I shouldnt have said that).

The freshman will likely end up getting close to 20% primarily because Maddie is a freshman (if she averages 25 minutes/game that is 12.5% of the total minutes by herself)...we will probably have one true freshman guard and one true freshman post player get some reserve minutes. The rest of the freshman will have to wait their turn and just see some mop up minutes this year. If there ever was a year to redshirt someone (Gibbs) this would be the year.

cuda, i think one of the guards could easily redshirt. logjam there as well.

to me you don't want to have to play Kornet at 4. She's a 3 or a 2 with her shooting range.
Can Sherri play small ball and use Kornet or Sharane at the 4? Sure, ideally between the "bigs" most of the 4/5 minutes are used up effectively.

Atlanta I think the game in general is becoming more guard and 3 point shot centric at all levels (nba, men's, etc)...for instance Cam Clark playing the 4 for Kruger. I think it is becoming imperative that your 4 be able to hit open 3 point shots so I think we will see a lot of Sharane and Nicole at the 4. The key will be team rebounding as Nicole G is not strong enough to be a great rebounder.
