Kruger addresses Smart situation with team

Not claiming that for a second. Quite the opposite.

If I thought an opposing player was guilty of a dirty play against one of our guys, I'd boo him loud and long without hesitation. And I'd boo the officials for not blowing the whistle, if that was the case.

I still wouldn't call the player a POC/S if he ended up on the ground within a few yards of me.

I like clever razzing. If Orr had made a flopping crack to Smart, I'd have been all for it. I thought it was funny when fans fired pop guns when Mizzou was playing (I can't remember how to spell that player's name). Students come up with some great stuff to get under an opposing player's skin, and I'm all for that.

Fair enough. You CAN understand someone feeling that way though and possibly vocalizing it. Doesn't necessarily make them all these bad insults that are being hurled at Orr. Certainly not racist as has been implied.

This Tech fan has attended the vast majority of Tech basketball & football games for 30 years. So doing a little rough math that's approximately 1000 games, and to the best of my knowledge the two most damning actions anyone can show are him giving B Davis the bird motion why wagging his tongue like a moron and him yelling at Marcus Smart. Because of these two things people feel free to rip the guy? Everything I have seen from people that actually know the guy has been positive. The only reason people are taking shots at this guy is because the original reporting hinted at a him being a racist. If the original reports were that he called Smart a piece of crap, this guy would not be facing anywhere near the amount of scrutiny he has received, in fact if those were the original reports Smart probably would have received the proper scrutiny he deserves instead of getting off lightly. Further, thousands of players have played in front of this guy without incident, whereas Smart has played roughly 50 games with multiple incidents.

The bottom line is Smart made a major mistake due to frustration & the fan behaved in a way that is accepted in every major sporting venue in the country, including Norman & Stillwater. Even if Smart had acted prudently and reported the fans actions, I doubt the arena security would have removed him for saying what he did, that is how tame his actions were.

As for the political commentary, it is obvious that Boca has really gotten under Denver's skin, and IMO his interjection of politics was a veiled dig at Boca. It amazes me that Denver has caught so much flack for his political commentary (yes it was misplaced) when Boca is the number 1 political offender on the board and is never called out for it in this manner.

For the record, I have never done more than a very infrequent booing of an opposing player, and chanted air ball. 99.9% of all cheering I do at games is for the team I am rooting for or just trying to be loud to disrupt the opposition. Although, I must admit that during the Notre Dame game in Norman I sat next to a guy dressed up in a Winnie the Pooh costume and he convinced me to yell "pooh on Notre Dame" a couple of times. :woot

And the other half of the board came in for criticism by other posters, so arguably that evened out. But I still have no desire to ever see politics brought up on this or any other sports board.

Did I insult liberals? Did I call them stupid? Of course not. I simply used the word liberal in reference to the beliefs of some that would justify Smarts actions based on the words of Orr. Not holding people accountable for their actions is an example of a liberal belief system. It was not a political reference. The problem isn't me or conservatives. The problem is a group of people that are literally offended by the use of the word liberal. If you are all so much more sophisticated, educated, and intelligent because you are liberals, why are you insulted by the word?

Smart was in the wrong, no matter what was said.

Orr is an example of the worst type of fan. He's not bright enough to be clever so he settles for crude.

If Bill Lamber attacked Spike Lee because Spike Lee called Bill Lambier a piece of crap, would anyone defend Bill Lambier? Would the media attack Spike Lee?

As probably the most liberal person on the board, I find it interesting that "not holding people accountable for their actions is an example of a liberal belief system." I'll have to remember that. I have been making a lot of errors by holding people responsible for ethical and logical behavior based on scientific principle.

If he's the worst kind if fan than a lot of OU/Thunder fans are downright scumbags.

This is unfortunately true. Thunder fans, in my experience, are bit more hostile and tend to be less informed than other NBA fans. I think it is because most of them only recently started to follow basketball and almost all only recently started following the NBA. So they tend to be less informed. I think once the team goes through the downs and not just the ups of a professional teams life cycles the fan base will come back down to earth and become more like other NBA fans.

As for the rest of you, I don't want this thread to become a political debate. Let's not go there. It breaks the forum rules and this certainly isn't the place for it. There is an internet full of people who love to tell you how dumb or smart you are for your political believes. We don't need to do that here.

I really haven't said much about this topic until now, mostly because of my disdain toward the fan. I just turned 51 a few days back, so I'm in the same generation as he (and by the game announcer's opinion, that would make me "elderly"). All I'm going to say is this. If you're a "baby boomer" and still feel the need to trash an amateur athlete at a sporting event, there's a good chance you're a complete and utter LOSER in every sense of the word. That's all.

To vilify the fan in Smart's defense is just plain bizarre.

Most observers -- on this board, at least -- are not doing that at all. They're starting with the fact that Smart's behavior cannot be defended, and then assessing the fan's behavior on its merits (or lack thereof).

Maybe, I hope you are right about that. It seemed to me that many are trying to create a false equivalency.

He didn't trash an amateur athlete....Smart plays for osu;)

LOL!

Let me add that I'm not defending what Smart did one bit. In the ESPN poll which we could choose from the 3-game suspension one of three options: too lenient, too harsh or about right - I chose the last one. Not only did that get the majority, the other two choices had about the same vote count...so three games was probably about right. With that said, if I could vote on how long the fan should be suspended from attending any basketball game, I would vote one year. I'm holding a 55 year old (or whatever he is) to a higher standard than a 19 year old.

Edit: I might be a little late to the game, but I just found out that the TTech fan gave up his tickets for the remainder of the season. It's nice to hear that someone his age realized that the one who initiated the entire incident shouldn't go without punishment.

OMG... SMH.

So, you think accusing someone of a "hate crime" that has been proven to be untrue warranted a three game suspension?
