Lon Kruger is one of the most patient coaches that allows his players to play through big lead dumps over and over again. It tends to bite him more than not from my perspective.

When aTm brought down OU's 19 point lead after halftime to 14 points, Lon Kruger called an immediate TO. I couldn't believe it. Lon did what he hasn't frequently done in the past. He stopped aTm's momentum in their tracks with a big lead still intact.

OU took heart during the TO and took the fight back to aTm.

I hope this trend continues going forward. :OU-logo:

Coach knows what he's doing - throughout this tournament he's stopped play immediately following momentum changing plays. He let this team grow through lots of opposing runs on their own and I think we're seeing it pay off now. We have a really mature group of kids and it's showing, I feel confidant in thinking that if we end up losing it'll be because we likely went up against a better team that particular day which is all you can ask for.

I love the fact he's reluctant to call the momentum TO early. Too often a waste. Show confidence in your kids that they can figure it out.

Completely agree.

:facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

i really like the way Lon trusts his guys to play through stuff (most of the time, and easy to say now we are on Elite Eight's Eve)....and put in his younger guys lately. he's a lot more like Billy than Kelvin in that regard, nothing against Kelvin....but, Lon came up in a much different Big 8 Tubbs-Norm-Johnny Orr style of play than what KS helped shape in the Eddie-Rick Barnes-Kelvin-Knight-Roy style of the early 00's Big XII....both were really strong times for the conference...just different eras....but i think Lon carries that as a "bench coach" philosophy.

I laughed at this because I knew you were going to catch some grief. I started a thread a few months back questioning Coach Kruger's timeout (or lack thereof) philosophy. That one wasn't received well, either, and I was less harsh than you. All I pointed out was that I didn't understand his philosophy on timeouts...still don't. Against Bakersfield, we had a "use it or lose it TO" in our last possession of the first half. No TO was called and we got a lousy shot off. Again, I'm not saying it was a bad decision. It was just one that I didn't understand. Regardless, my first thought when he called that TO early in the second half was "Thank You, Lon."

Reading this, I was reminded of one thing that Billy Tubbs was hard-headed about. He absolutely hated to call the first timeout in a game, no matter the situation. He always preferred that the coach of the other team call the first one. That was an ingrained part of his coaching philosophy.

You are right, Billy thought an early TO was a sign of weakness.

Lon was smart with the early TO.
