Ku game

Tough game...loved our effort in 2nd half

Ku is NOT #5...

Freeman was really not good...cant play post def behind a guy bigger than you.

Like usual ku fans dont know ****

Played really hard, especially in 2nd half. Neither team could buy a 3 but expect a game that’s lower scoring with good defenses & big12 physicalness.

All you guys saying KU isn't #5... give OU some credit for making the #5 team in the country look that bad.

At home & was down double digits multiple times. Couldn’t make anything from the perimeter but most were good shots. Love watching this team this year.

Just got home from the game, agree with a lot of what I've seen posted. Disappointing we didn't shoot better, we had a lot of open looks for our best shooters, especially early when we really could have opened a bit of a margin. If James or Freeman make every two or three more from distance, we could have stolen a win. But love the effort. Last year we would have lost by 25+ on a night where we shot that poorly. Defended great in halfcourt, just gave up a few too many transition opportunities in the first half.

Maintain this defensive level all season and we'll win plenty of games.

great stuff 100% agree

Eric Bailey's recap...

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Phog stung Oklahoma once again on Wednesday night.

The Sooners were overpowered early and fell short late in a 70-63 loss at No. 5 Kansas in the Big 12 Conference opener for both schools.

OU coach Lon Kruger pointed to a 19-2 first-half run by the Jayhawks that crushed the No. 23 Sooners’ dream of winning their first game in Allen Fieldhouse since 1993.

“We dug ourselves a pretty good-sized hole in the first half,” Kruger said before unleashing a laundry list of problems. “I thought we didn’t handle the ball very well. I thought KU created some turnovers. We didn’t do very good in transition. They got a lot of stuff off our offense in the first half.”

The early poor play led to a 40-25 deficit at halftime, but the Sooners didn’t abandon hope. OU kept chipping away at the Jayhawks’ lead and cut it to 67-63 with 30.9 seconds left before going scoreless the rest of the way.

That was a good performance given the circumstances. I expected a 20 point blowout.

If we play well we can absolutely get KU in Norman.

We had several unforced TO's in the game...just tried 1/5 too much.

We kept the crowd out of it for the most part. Ku missed a lot of wide open looks as well. Rough night shooting the 3 for both teams.

Doo did a decent job def in the post, but everyone else just got eaten alive. Manek finally tried to front Lawson vs playing from behind, those guys are just too big and strong for he and Freeman.

James struggled early...2 airballs from 10ft in 2nd half were tough.

It seemed every time we got close we'd either turn it over or take a bad shot.

Definitely liked our fight, last year we would have rolled up and died.

What was that all ball signal about? No way Doolittle wasn’t fouled! Gutless no call!!!

I went back and watched this twice. Doolittle was first fouled on the rebound by a guard and then destroyed with a forearm by a KU big which was extended parallel with the ground. ZERO verticality and the ref signals all ball after OU fouled to stop the clock. Clearly a foul.

That and the rolling around on the ground with the ball and no travel call a few minutes earlier insured a KU victory.

I replayed the Doolittle foul four more times this morning and came to the same conclusion. Joe DeRosa, a former NBA official, missed the call. When OU’s bench complained, he gave the on the ball signal. The KU big (#1) not only had his forearm in Doo’s side, as you described, he used his hip to shove him down low. The defender was in the opposite of a legal verticality guarding position. DeRosa just blew the call.

I’ll add that I thought the officiating in that game was on the whole better than we usually get in the Phogg. Too bad the no calls in the last few minutes missed the mark.

Azubuike was allowed to live in the paint last night. My dad and I stopped the game on numerous occasions to see how many times he was in the lane for 5+ seconds.

Doolittle was definitely fouled at the end, but ultimately the game was lost because of that awful spell in the last 3 minutes of the first half and the inability of OU's players to hit wide open 3 point attempts (KU also missed a number of wide open 3 pointers). It was mostly a brickfest from both teams from deep.

There were definitely missed calls, including the one on Doo late. But we also got a big break when they called KU for a charge when our guy was clearly in the restricted area. In the NBA, I think they can review that, but apparently not in college because that would have been an easy reversal.

The one ironic thing is that we tried to foul Doke late (right before the under 4:00 timeout) when he got the ball in the backcourt, and they didn't call it. I turned to my friend and said, "the only time I actually want OU to be called for a foul in Allen Fieldhouse, is the one time they don't blow the whistle!" All in all, I thought last night wasn't as bad a screw job as usual in Allen, but it's sad we have to basically grade the refs on a curve in Lawrence.

yep. sometimes you just gotta make a few buckets. we needed a couple of guys to step up more and they didn't.

But that's exactly when the officials are supposed to deliver the home cooking in Lawrence, and, as in the three-OT game a few years ago, they came through as expected.

I would overall agree with your comments here... especially the no call on the charge. You were in the stands, was it really as quiet during that 2nd half run, as portrayed on the TV & Radio broadcast?

And as was said, we just gotta be strong and make a bucket down the stretch... I think if we all were to know that as a team we would go down by 15 at the half, have no Muni & have a porous shooting performance from outside the arc... Everyone would have predicted a 30 point blowout loss...

So, that's whats crazy about this team, THEY JUST DON"T FOLD and Give up... This is a team I think will win quite a few Big 12 games. At half, I wasn't so sure, but they went out and stole the momentum and almost pulled off a stunner.

yeah when they came out down 15 and bore down like that I was really impressed - win or lose.

I didn't think it was as loud last night as it usually is. Still louder than any other building, but not like it I have heard it many times. Even in the first half, when KU went on their run, it wasn't quite as crazy. it definitely was quiet in the first few minutes of the second half, I think people were expecting a complete blowout at halftime and when that didn't happen, they were definitely shocked.

But not until the 3rd OT. It was as if a switch was flipped when the 3rd OT started. Otherwise, it was a well officiated game.

If you are talking about the one on Manek it might have been a bad call. But if his heels were on the line it was probably by less than an inch. Way too close for anyone to see live. They replayed it on TV. I would have left that one alone either way as I felt that there was not enough direct contact but that happens all the time.
