Nine months since they previously faced off, and back on the same Mabee Center court, the Choctaw girls got a much different outcome than the last meeting with Muskogee.
Choctaw knocked off the second-ranked Roughers 58-37 behind 16 points from junior star Ana Llanusa — 11 of which came in the fourth quarter — to give the Yellowjackets the Tournament of Champions title.
Last March, Muskogee defeated Choctaw 67-64 in overtime in the Class 6A state semifinals.
From the Tulsa Paper:
Choctaw’s girls finally have a signature win at the Mabee Center and Muskogee is still looking for a championship in the same building.
The 6A No. 6 Yellowjackets got off to a hot start Wednesday and raced to a stunningly easy 58-37 triumph over the No. 2 Roughers in the girls final of the 51st Tournament of Champions.
Choctaw standout guard Ana Llanusa scored 16 points and was named tourney MVP as chosen by the Tulsa World after scoring 48 points in three games.
Zahria White added 15 points and 14 rebounds and Bailey Golden had 13 points and six rebounds as Choctaw gave Muskogee its first loss in seven games this season.
The Yellowjackets avenged a heartbreaking loss to the Roughers in the semifinals of the 6A state tournament last March at the Mabee Center and were also motivated by an equally devastating 6A semifinal loss to Broken Arrow the year before in the same venue.
“It’s great to finally get a (championship) here and get back at Muskogee for last year,” Llanusa said. “They’re a great team.”
The 5-foot-11 junior took a nasty spill with 5:21 left when she soared over a table and hit her head in the sunken press area away from the team benches. But she didn’t mind sitting at the end because the Yellowjackets were never threatened after building a 36-14 lead at halftime.
Muskogee fell in a tournament final at the Mabee Center for the third time. The Roughers lost to East Central in last year’s tourney final and lost to Broken Arrow in the 6A championship game last March, both in overtime.
“We didn’t come ready tonight and they wanted it a lot more than we did,” Muskogee coach Doyle Roland said. “We have some things we have to address. We didn’t play as a team, and until we do that, we’re always gonna be second place.”
Choctaw held Rougher standouts Aaliyah Wilson, Jada Ford and Trena Mims to a combined 31 points. The same trio accounted for 63 points in a 72-44 semifinal win over Claremore.
“Defense wins championships,” Choctaw coach Ryan Maloney said. “We wanted to limit (Wilson’s and Ford’s) touches and get rebounds. Aaliyah Wilson had 19 rebounds (along with 35 points) against us last year.”
This time, Choctaw outrebounded the Roughers 43-24. Wilson had 16 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Mims scored 12 and Ford was held to three.
Wilson and Ford, who scored 30 points in the Claremore win, joined Llanusa on the six-player all-tourney team, along with Choctaw’s Bailey Golden, Vinita’s Carsyn Spurgeon and Seiling’s Taylor Hedrick.
Choctaw (9-1): Ana Llanusa 16, Zahria White 15, Bailey Golden 13, Lindsey Hurley 8, Jessica Fairley 4, Mikala Wright 2.
Muskogee (6-1): Aaliyah Wilson 16, Trena Mims 12, Jada Ford 3, Leigh Westbrook 3, Brandi Nash 2, Aaliyah Dailey-Lee 2.
