Lon Kruger to be named OU coach

Sources close to the situation confirmed to the Sun on Friday that UNLV men's basketball coach Lon Kruger is expected to accept the same position at Oklahoma.

Two days ago the Sun reported that Kruger had turned down Oklahoma's request for an interview. Those reports were accurate, but Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione wouldn't take "no" for an answer, and the Sooners' third offer simply couldn't be turned down.

It is rumored that Kruger's contract with Oklahoma would be a seven-year deal.

He just had a Florida team that made it to the final four one time and rebuilt a floundering unlv program, going to the NCAA tourney 4 out of the last 5 years...he ****ing sucks.

Its just hard for me to believe that a great coach who is 58 would be at UNLV. Has he ever had any great teams?

Won 20 games as HC at Texas Pan-Am? Have you ever heard of Texas Pan-Am? Not many have. Impressive.
Took KSU to an elite 8
Took Florida to a final 4
Recruited the team at Illinois which Self took to the elite 8.
Was hired by the Atlanta Hawks for millions of dollars.
Has taken UNLV to 4 consecutive NCAA tourneys with a sweet 16 in his 1st or 2nd year.

All programs he has taken over have been in the dumps when he was named HC. He has yet to walk into a program like Calipari got at Kentucky or even like Pastner got at Memphis.

UNLV had been to the tournament 2 times in 15 years prior to his arrival. They've now gone 4 times in 5 years, as you say. Yeah, the guy is a bum.

It's not a home run.

Lon's a veteran coach (retread coach?) but there's a real plateau with his hiring.

And recruiting wise what does he bring to the table.

Sure's he's been doing okay at UNLV, but nothing more than that.

I'm afraid that this is an average high, and at a reported 2 million a year OU has way way overpaid for average.

lol UNLV fans think their program is elite and can do better then Kruger.

i think senior was just backing a brotha up. Don't worry, we'll have to all huddle together while all the other (football) fans are unhappy that we didn't get Tubby Huggins or Pimp C to be our coach.

Mods, post this at the top. This puts it in perspective perfectly.

Joe C. got about as good of a guy he could have. Though Buzz was my first choice as well, not even he has the pedigree Kruger has when it comes to turning around programs.

He's won 61% of his games, and that's including a 46% winning percentage during his time at UTPA. (His record improved each year there)

That's not average.

Whoever mentioned how Kruger has taken over troubled programs and turned them around on multiple occassions should be the main thing we are worried about. We can not afford to take a risk on another young, inexperienced guy who may not be ready to handle the job. At the worst Kruger will bring stability here and hopefully get the program back in the tourney really soon.

The guy's taken three different programs to the Sweet 16 and four to the NCAA Tournament. That's REALLY solid.
