He was one I mentioned when both Sampson and Capel left. He would have been a good hire. At the time Capel left some on here made him out to be a pariah and it sounded like he had some baggage.

He's now assembled a great team in Wichita and may be the first mid-major to win it all (since Texas Western).

I would have been a little more impressed by his coaching if Cleanthony Early had touched the ball even ONCE on any of WSU's final three possessions...

For anyone with no memory of 1990, you basically just got a replay of OU vs. North Carolina. While 1990 was OU's deepest team EVER, that team was never expected to close out the pre-tournament as the #1 team in the country. There were no Burger Boys or future NBA draft picks; just a team that had an incredible regular season. Then comes the NCAA Tournament, and there's a #8 seed in their region loaded with Burger Boys and future NBA players who just happened to underachieve during the regular season.

The result was not only the same, they were both nail-biters where the outcome wasn't decided until you heard the buzzer sound. Wichita State had a great season, but when a team of Burger Boys puts it all together, you better be at your best to beat them.

At this moment, I'm having trouble getting the name "Rick Fox" out of my head.

Kentucky as an 8 seed was an absolute travesty. I don't think Wichita State was great, but they got completely screwed with that draw. A 24 win team that is loaded with NBA talent from a power conference as an 8? That's a joke. I know the SEC was down this year, but still.

Kentucky was allowed the physical play, yet wichita st was not. Tough loss for the shockers. Kentucky isn't an 8 seed and they had the toughest draw. Score one for the power brokers of college athletics, ie slimeballs like calipari.

I agree and add the location (STL) which is far closer to Lexington than Wichita was another screw job. Kentucky should have been sent somewhere else. I feel bad for WSU.

Knew Calipari would sleaze his way to a victory. Even picked them in my bracket..you can't go against calipari vs. noble/good, he always wins.

And yet one could say the EXACT same thing about North Carolina 24 years ago. That was my point. OU should have had a less tedious path to the Sweet 16, as should have Wichita State this year.

Yeah I was agreeing with you, not arguing. K-State, Memphis, and George Washington are good examples of what 8/9s should look like. Not Kentucky.

Wasn't that game played in Austin? My grandpappy was there and still brings that up as a time when the NCAA rigged the system.

Kentucky earned the 8. Their season didn't warrant a higher seed.

They won 24 games, 12 conference games, and came within one point of winning their conference tournament (which probably would have gotten them a 3 seed). They were not an 8.

It's pretty hard to justify the unfair seeding that the "big 3" (Louisville, Mich St, and Kentucky) got when the committee specifically mentioned their lack of non conference wins and overall body of work when they then decide to disregard that notion when seeding Virginia.

Early not touching the ball at the end was odd.
Kind of like Cam not getting a touch at the end of regulation in the NDST game.

Kentucky beat two tournament teams all year. 10 losses, only one or two good wins all year = low seed.

Dallas...it was exactly where Billy wanted to play the first two rounds. We just didn't get a good draw...kind of like Wichita State this year. Had they beat Kentucky, they would have another heavyweight waiting in the Sweet 16 - Louisville. In 1990, we would have had to play a dangerous #4 in Arkansas (who wound up representing that region) and their terrific backcourt of Lee Mayberry and Todd Day.

I'm 99% sure that game was in Austin. The Texas fans and Arkansas fans both rooted against us. We were by far the visiting team that day due to everyone cheering for UNC.
