Match-Up Zone

All Game Every game for the rest of the year

I agree. Teams were already knocking down threes in man. Might as well stop some of dribble penetration and give our guys a chance to create some easy buckets. Cam is a monster at the top of that 1-3-1.

I disagree. Keep the opposition guessing. Switch it up after timeouts. Make them think

Switch the zones up. Add some fullcourt man. You can still mix it up.

I agree, but unless we're going to turn into Syracuse, we need to get better at man. If not for this year, for the future.

They are not good enough to do anything all game every game!

I agree with you on that. Hopefully Goff and Osby can be guys that help with man next year. I think they can.

It would be nice if we would recognize that we dont have the horses to play man the entire game and actually start playing zone before we are down 10-15 points in the first 5 minutes of every game.

+1 :ez-laugh: It worked out for us today, but yeah I don't really want to see us playing man anymore...

You switch it up because you have to but for the most part the match-up zone should be worked on as our bread 'n butter with this team. The length of this team is quite impressive. It's not just Cam, although he's been pretty darn effective all by himself in it.

It certainly seemed to shorten the game yesterday. I don't think we can play it all game but whatever we can do to give the other team fewer offensive possessions is good for us.

Exactly what I have been saying for sometime. It should be obvious to everyone by now that this team gives up way too many drives, layups and open shots when trying to defend in a man to man. I've said before that going to a man defense for short periods to keep an opponent off balance is fine. Anything more than a minute or two opens the door to scoring runs like the one ORU, and every other team we have played this year, put on us to start the game yesterday.

This team is actually pretty good in a match up zone. I also like our half court traps. Both defenses gave ORU fits yesterday. I say we should stick with those defenses for the remainder of the season. Switch up our zone sets, add the zone traps when the situation calls for that wrinkle, and mix in a man to man a couple of times per game as an element of surprise. But, PLEASE do not stay in a man for more than a minute or two.

Would there be anything wrong with turning into Syracuse?

That's basically what Baylor did (committed to a 2-3 zone) and they finally started living up to the hype on paper. And for the many fans wondering what Capel's identity really is as a coach, this could be it.
