Matt Painter to Mizzou early this week

The Sawyer kiss of death.

Would be pretty surprising if true though, an upgrade over Anderson.

congrats if true. hard to believe though considering what he has going on over there.

A search of real time Twitter results shows people citing "reports" from "inside the Missouri athletic department" that Painter will be named the Missouri coach by Tuesday and other people citing reports from "inside the Purdue athletic department" that Painter will not leave. lol

Several people have posted that they heard from numerous sources that Painter had expressed interest in Mizzou BEFORE Anderson left. And the reasons were never really explained. Apparently there's something beyond just money that drew his interest (if it was just that, his name would've been associated with all the openings, but it was just MU).

I have no idea what the tie is.

And I just read that apparently the Purdue rivals site is saying $2 million/7 years, and it's a done deal (not their writers, but an insider there).

I'm trying to figure out why Painter would take a lateral move AWAY from his alma mater.

If he does leave for Mizzou then there is something weird going on with the Painter-Purdue dynamic. That just makes no sense whatsoever.

That is of course assuming that Purdue is just going to sit there and stubbornly shake their heads without giving him another dime.

Exactly. People are talking about how Stevens is out of the question for us (which I agree) yet saying that Painter would go to Mizzou? I won't believe it until I see a press conference.

That's apparently what they tend to do...

His assistants are also notoriously underpaid.

He got a big raise last year (after his second Big 10 COY award) and he's still one of the lowest paid Big 10 coaches.

The fact that Tennessee acted pretty rapidly in securing Cuonzo leads me to believe that there could actually be something in the works here. However the fact that Cuonzo is now spoken for could also light a fire under Purdue's arse and get them to pony up more cash to keep Painter.

Cuonzo could always "Dana Altman" the Vols I suppose.

That would be an amazing hire, and he would have a big time roster available to him next season at Mizzou.

They wouldnt skip a beat.

Dunno, kinda makes me think the opposite. If Cuonzo knew Purdue was opening up, why wouldn't he wait around for that job?

Here's how Mizzou fans are connecting the dots at this point.

Painter's interest has a lot to do with the cheap nature of Purdue's AD. Martin obviously knows about this, as well.

Painter currently makes about $1.3 million/year. Martin knows he won't get close to that at Purdue.

Painter and Martin share an agent, so they undoubtedly communicate on things like this.

Martin's offered $1.5 at Tennessee (more than Painter makes at Purdue, and probably double what Purdue would offer him). He takes it immediately.

Martin also takes the job knowing that even if Painter stays at Purdue, he is not #2 on the list. The Mizzou job wouldn't be an option for him. He's also apparently not #1 on Purdue's list if Painter does leave. He has four options: stay at Missouri State, wait on Purdue (may never come, AD is cheap), wait on Mizzou (may never come, but AD will pay), or take $1.5 million/year from an SEC team. His choice is easy.

Rumor has it now that Purdue may be ready to settle for Paul Lusk, Painter's current top assistant.

Hope it's true. Just because I like good coaches. What an awesome turn of events that would be for Mizzou fans, losing Anderson, who I think was good but had a certain ceiling with that style of play, and I don't think he is Nolan Richardson redux or anything. To getting Painter who has had some incredibly good defensive teams in the last 4 or 5 years.
