MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

I doubt anyone is going to change other side’s mind in the Portal Thread but people have said the same things for decades about sports regarding franchise relocation, free agency, sex scandals, mythical national champions, conference expansion whatever. It continues to grow or at least occupy a privileged position in the American entertainment landscape.

America loves sports, both professional and college. I’d argue college is maybe even more insulated since thousands of people spend their formative years on a campus. Maybe NIL is fundamentally different than the past “crises” but seems like the same old moral panic.
Yeah but a huge piece of that, particularly in college sports, was that you get to "grow" with the player and watch them progress and make memories together (by proxy through the tv). Now thats all dead and gone.

I used to get so excited when we got a new commit (it felt like christmas a little bit) bc it meant id see the guy play for 3 or so years.. now its a new roster every year. I dont know any of the names of the dudes were after and i don't really care (and they don't really care about the school/community either) bc odds are theyll leave next year too.

Itd be like if every indiana jones movie had a different indiana jones actor in every single movie..

Sounds like you're aiming this at myself or maybe @TEvans4Three

I'm not one to argue all too much, lol.

But yeah, duh.

1. This staff is anti-social media. Staunchly. Or anti-using social media in a way that's visible to us. I know they're recruiting mostly out of our sight. Instead of having public excitement, we're stuck with guys like Glibert DMing Bob P or we're stuck with Trilly when he has anything in regards to an OU target. Yay and that's kind of the point too. If we can't share in the excitement, or be allowed to know (some of) what they're doing, accusations of doing a poor job will be prevalent (based on what is known - they're getting their asses kicked right now).

On the topic of social media....DOES IT HURT THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM? Very little (from what I can tell). DOES IT HELP THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM? Very much so. I'd argue that it's a very critical component of their program. I don't get why the MBB staff is against it but you know, it's their funeral, so to speak.

2. Do you think I'm serious when I say I could do better? Heck no. Could I help? Maybe, maybe not. I couldn't be a college head coach, I know that. Could I sit in an office, help keep things organized, and maybe help in some way? IDK, probably a little. My point with that talk is.....what they've been doing for 3+ years now hasn't worked well (or fully). This cycle, so far, any of us could have landed Elvis (it was more about the OU/SEC brand than anything....his next choice was likely Charleston) and struck out on Overton, Pedulla, Scott, and Garrison (not over but you know what's going to happen). And let's be realistic here, just because a dude is working at OU officially, it doesn't 100% make him a better basketball mind than some of us (not saying myself, speaking in general terms). There are God-awful GAs, coaches, staffers all over the place that are only coaching because they can't do much else. Some couldn't scout or coach their way out of a paper bag. I'm not talking about Moser here. Moser knows the damn game. Is every OU coach/staffer elite at what they do? I'd argue no and I've argued that OU needs a GM, for a reason.

3/4. Do I think the coaches want to win? Yes. Moser is a fiery competitor. That much is evident by his visible personality. All we have to do is watch one presser. Do I think they know how to win at this level (B12 now SEC)? No. For 3+ years, what Moser has shown me is he can't construct a roster, and keep them, that will get to the tournament. It's not a question on intentionally having dysfunction but there's clearly dysfunction. I've said this a ton but I think Moser is better mid major HC and roster assembler. He can't win at the high major level enough and he doesn't know how to assemble the right kind of roster....so yes, Moser wants to win but his stubbornness or poor methods end up winning out in the long run.
I will take some blame here.

I don't think he is lazy, I think PM is fiery and stubborn.

But they are NOT doing well in the portal. It is pretty obvious that it has been mismanaged. What other team has 5 open spots and has only had 6 in person visits? Are we so high on ourselves that we think a team missing the tournament 3 years in a row, turning the ball over a crap ton, getting talent in and out the door (NOT STAYING), is going to be a one-shot call and get the guy to commit type of place? We aren't a Top-25 program and havent been for a bit. We have to outthink and outwork other teams to get ahead until NIL catches up.

We are not in a position to take time, be the nice guy, and wait out commits. We should be cycling in visitors, evaluating and reaching out to every 1st teamer on a G5 squad. We need to be hosting visitors, have a GM to manage the NIL/outreach side of the house, and better in-person scouting to get what you want.

Moser, it seems, is just throwing darts at the dartboard for guys that he could easily kinda get bc they are local and unhappy, instead of finding guys to fit his system and what he wants to run.

I will die on this sword all day, this portal season has been an absolute mess and shows me how disorganized we seem to be. Social media presence and outreach is abysmal. CnC NIL is abysmal.

Fan support is there, they showed up to big games and we didn't deliver. Only so much you can do and point at...NIL, admin before you have to see teams that fight through that. Coaches that build cohesive rosters and out-grind games and get wins out. Not turn the ball over a million times, have guards jealous of another, and a center who should be starting for Utah Valley, not OU. (Backup, yes)

The system can work, it has worked, Moser has done it...but the pressure or lack of consistency has seemingly doomed his entire career here. Either figure it out and build a solid core around what you want to do by actually getting people to visit...or take it easy, miss the tournament again, and we pray that no one has scooped up Bucky McMillan yet. Bring back Billyball aka Buckyball.

Amazed at Ole Miss’s NIL infrastructure, they cleaned up in football portal, baseball is their primary and are still lighting money on fire for basketball.
1) They're desperate. They've been getting kicked around by the Bamas and LSUs of the world for decades.
2) Schools such as Ole Miss and SMU with long probation histories can now pay players legally. It's just a matter of getting it done right.

While I would never cheer for anything other than a win for ou in every sport, I also think it is going to require a complete bottoming out of the hoops program before people get motivated (or not).

Oh I agree about the first part (OU has been on probation a ton, I would hope we embrace that too haha) but just hope boosters/OU admin recognize the importance of investing to stay relevant in the major revenue sports.

Seems like Godfrey's visit might've been a sideshow to his dad catching up with Switzer, who he played for in Dallas.

Too early to completely write him off, but it's headed in that direction, imo.

We’ve had this specific discussion so will say same thing. I agree, I follow recruiting pretty closely and it means a little less. However I personally love the transfer aspect, it’s a more compelling roster construction model IMO. I’m sure there are fans like you who will care less, there are fans like me who will actually care more but I think it’s moot because casual fans (who drastically out-number you/me) don’t care.

The ratings back that up although if you have specific data that contradicts that, I would love to read it.

That's the culture change of the last 25 years. We were and still are known for what happened in the football program 30+ years ago. Our leadership worked hard to clean up that mess and to not create another one. But it's now legal to pay players legally. It's a new paradigm that we weren't ready for.

What’s giving you that idea?

Fair.

but imo its way too premature to measure the negatives that im highlighting. We will see in the long-term. You may very well be right and I'm wrong. Well see

It's the Wichita way.
No, it isn’t. Those of us who aren’t injecting ourselves with hopium every 30 seconds realize the dire straits we’re in.

Kids from Oklahoma (Overton, Pedulla) and others with Oklahoma ties (Scott) aren’t picking OU, so why in the hell would Godfrey?

I want to be dead wrong because Godfrey could help us, but this portal season has not been kind so far.
