MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

We also need a big who is good offensively. I am not saying he can't be that guy -- just that it is far from certain.
If we look at player A and compare his career stats to that of Garrison's I would assume we would all take this improvement/steady play throughout his career:

Player A didn't flash much at all during his career based on the stats on paper but he's a guy I assume most would take and actually has improved a lot as a guy the team could go to for offense if needed this season. I don't think looking at player A above on paper that he would have been a guy many on this board would say we NEED go go get that guy but he's an absolute vital piece to the team he plays for and IF Garrison becomes half the player that guy is for his team, he's well worth the investment. Garrison is always Big 12 tested and looks to have done pretty well being thrown into the fire as a Freshman.

Player A is J'wan Roberts for Houston.

I think the thing with Garrison is that adding him gives us the potential to go to the next level defensively. The one thing OU has been elite at the entire time PM has been here has been the 3 point defense. If you can add a legit rim protector to that it could make the defense so much better.

Offensively, Garrison gives you a rim runner with a little back to the basket game. I also think an underrated part of his game is his passing ability. We know Moser loves having bigs that can pass dating back to his time at Loyola. I think Garrison brings more of that than any of the bigs he's had at OU to this point. Plus he's got 3 years of eligibility remaining and is an Okie. That gives us a better chance of long-term retention
I don't know that I think Garrison is THAT good on defense (yet). But I'm certainly not saying he isn't or can't be. He was a freshman, so there is some project-ability there.

We'll see in time.

Or we need to be so good on offense 1-4 that the 5 doesn't have to be. We're a ways off from that, so that is why IMO, I'm not as sold on Garrison moving the needle much.

Targeting JUCO players is so '90s/2000s.

The reality is prep school and reclassifying pretty much eliminated the highly rated JUCO market. Combine that with the transfer portal and penalty-free transfers, and I'm not sure a JUCO AA would be any more talented than some of the mid-majors in the portal. I supposed there is always a handful that may have had an issue coming out of HS that were forced to go JUCO, but the track now is prep school to D1, or go to a North Texas, IUIPI, Drexel, Binghamton, App State, etc and then enter the portal with some stats to get NIL to a bigger school. No Larry Johnsons, Jimmy Bulters, or Mookie Blaylocks in today's era.

Even successful JUCO players in today's game like Waldo or Tylor Perry went to a D1 school after JUCO before their current success.

I get the apprehension on some of the guys- I even have some concern about Pedulla and his TO rate- but pretty much can ignore the name on the front of the jersey. Treat the portal like the NFL does the combine- they don't really care about the school and just look at the measurables and see how they transfer to the league.
There are guys out there that can play, and a lot of them play at JUCO's in our state or neighboring states.

Nobody is saying to recruit JUCO's like the Billy Tubbs days. But to completely ignore them is ignorant.

I get the joke but I could have found/picked from numerous bigs that had similar or worse stats early in their careers to Garrison. I think he's worth the investment and for the record he could end up with much better stats yearly than Roberts based on his natural talent and size alone compared to Roberts. Will he work as hard to improve is the question. Yes coaching makes a difference as well but players have to be willing to put in that extra effort as well. It's not just about shots up in the gym, but conditioning, nutrition/diet, etc that allow these guys to improve year to year. I'll be interested to see Garrison's development no matter where he ends up at this point.

no, I get that. I was just having some fun. I will be happy if we get him. Other than our two games, I didn't watch OSU at all, but seeing the list of schools that are in on him, I am confident that he has real potential.

DePaul should be the first call. They need to bring Chicago kids home.

Some things just make a lot of sense (geographical in this case)

Again, any names you want to add? You have yet to offer any players you think are good/better fits. I'm curious about the JUCO guys you mention.
