MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

I’m big on second chances. Kids make mistakes, sometimes really bad ones.

I’d put him on a short leash if after spending some time with him and seeing if he seems sincere
I think it’d be worth our due diligence but you better turn over every rock and know everything. No surprises. Plus, you could get him cheap.

Every kid can seem sincere during a short visit to campus. And some are, no doubt. But I'm sure KU thought Arterio Morris was sincere, and he was barely on campus before getting in much more serious trouble. I would draw a hard line as a coach and not consider any player who had been convicted or pled guilty to any physical violence against a woman. Not saying people shouldn't get to be productive members of society, but getting paid/a scholarship to represent a school is entirely different.

If it weren't for his domestic violence, this is the juco kid you'd want....but yeah, not going to be someone you can add. Former 5 star. Leads juco in scoring.

-----------

Second in scoring, an Okie from Muskogee. Has offers from Siena, Southern Indiana, San Jose State, and Prairie View. He should take the San Jose State offer if it's still valid. Siena isn't...fired coach. Oral Roberts should be beating his door down...maybe even Tulsa.

And this goes to my earlier point... if a kid who is talented at that level is in a JUCO in 2024, it's not because someone missed him or didn't scout JUCOs. It's because he had an issue in his past- grades, criminal, attitude, etc.- that kept him from a prep school<college or small school<D1 portal.

I suppose you might find one or two diamond in the roughs in JUCOs, but you probably can find 10x that many, or more, spending the same amount of energy in the portal.

Guarantee if word got out that our staff was spending time scouting JUCOs and were missing on commits from the portal, there is a vocal group who would want them fired.

I might look into the JUCO success either tonight or tomorrow.

Perhaps looking at the top 25 JUCO prospects from last year and seeing how they did this year for comparison.

I know you are the research and stat king who would have more evidence than my anecdotal reporting, but there aren't many since NIL and free transfers.

There have been a handful or a few that have done okay at the P6 D1 level but most of the JUCO transfers are going to mid-majors or small colleges, or their best success is their second transfer from JUCO from the transfer portal. Like Waldo. Tyron Grant-Foster who started at JUCO, went to KU and was one of the stars at GCU. But they went to D1 and it was their second stop were they flourished. Alondes Williams is the perfect example.

Kedrian Johnson to WVA comes to mind as a JUCO that did well. But plenty of flops too. We should know as Maewin was a top 5 JUCO out of Navarro.

Those are just a sampling of the top of my head. But the point is still the same- scouting JUCOs is not going to find the next Larry Johnson or Mookie Blaylock. Crap, I doubt it even finds the next Corey Brewer or Quannas White. That level of player is being found in the portal 99% of the time. That is where the coaches can be more efficient.

I am so sorry everyone for what is about to transpire.

I have compiled the Top50 2023 JUCO players' stats for this year based on their D-I results.

A few things to note before looking at the list:
-This list is from JUCOrecruiting.com
-2022 had 25 players from the Top50 NOT go D-I (Would have made my night so much easier)
-2024 has 37 uncommitted to D-I schools, that could change
-2023 had all but 1 go D-I in the Top100. More an exception than a rule I would think
-Please note the schools that are getting these guys as well, not many Power5 at all

Here is the list and I will post my excel screenshot. (Green players being potential, Yellow meh, unmarked...wouldn't xtweet at/contact)

I don't know that I think Garrison is THAT good on defense (yet). But I'm certainly not saying he isn't or can't be. He was a freshman, so there is some project-ability there.

We'll see in time.
I agree. The guy from UCF destroyed him in the last OSU game. However he’s better than OU’s bigs.

Yeah, Dickinson's offense makes that a different scenario all together.

Like you said, I see both sides of it, just not sure what Garrison's true ceiling is, especially offensively. And not sure PM's offense will take advantage of what he does well.
Bill Self doesn’t like coaching Dickinson. I bet he’d take Garrison over a soft player like Dickinson, even tho Dickinson is 3 times a better scorer.

One thing I would like to make clear on the stats I posted above.

I think there are a few diamonds in the rough that can be good fillers...however, if we are not evaluating the 1000s of players in the portal from solid programs and proven track record and take a JUCO as a first priority, our coaching staff has failed in every aspect of evaluation.

You take a P5/G5 guy over a JUCO guy. JUCO is a last resort option.

In no sane world is anyone taking a JUCO prospect over Garrison. It should never happen at a team wanting to be a Top-25 program.

Things were different pre-portal. No one is sitting a season out anymore. That was a big reason for JUCO

Juco is making a sight comeback.

So far, nothing points to OU recruiting Northern Colorado player Saint Thomas, the former Loyola player. Should OU? Maybe, I love the kid's game. Would be a great replacement for Oweh.

Anyway, he might be a package deal, I'm not sure, but his girlfriend is in the portal. I can't say I've watched one second of Hannah's games but her stats are pretty good.

For who? UAB, USF, North Texas, Bowling Green, and WKU...sure.

JUCO guys making an impact at P5 schools?
For kicks and giggles. I took 4 conferences, went with the top 6 teams of each and 7 deep. These are all the JUCO guys for those schools and where they are:
