MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

Was he unproven coming out of high school when Uconn/Kansas/Alabama/UCLA/Creighton/Houston/Gonzaga and a whole lot more offered him a scholarship?
Were all those coaches wrong?

Why step down when he could have stayed?

They’re in the portal for proven game-changers. Cooper is the opposite of that.

Portal =\= high school recruiting.

Why step down when he could have stayed? My guess is Porter wants proven, experienced players who he thinks can make an impact, and make an impact now. And….he went to the portal for that.

Man. I wish we could hire Pitino until he retires. Even for just a few seasons. Just win. I don’t care about his baggage. lol

Do you ever contribute any actual basketball thoughts, or just like hating on posts that don't pump enough sunshine for you?

Nope, just like to bag on the haters. How long does it take you to log in and out of your two accounts?

Misses?
  1. Kevin Overton
  2. Sean Pedulla
  3. Brandon Garrison
  4. Aaron Scott
  5. RJ Godfrey
  6. Kadary Richmond

Godfrey and Richmond stayed home, obviously.

How many of those were due to $. Scott was basically committed until the last few hours. Pedulla/BG also went for more $, although I never thought we would get BG.

I guess we'll be all in on Onyenso now? He would have been great on last year's team, or if we landed Richmond, but I don't think he's enough unless I'm underrating our incoming guards.

I'd guess Scott was the only pure money one. We have a lot of things working against us this offseason, including a lame duck coach and an uninspiring supportive cast. We could have landed most of the others with the biggest bag, but you can only be the highest bidder so many times. Even in football.

If this team doesn't get another guard that is better than those currently on the roster, I expect a pretty deliberate offense. But it could be decently efficient with three point shooters. If we can get a defending big who can rim run on the pick and roll, that would be great.

We’ve signed guys that rank in the low 200s according to most rankings. We didn’t exactly beat out great programs for any of them. If signing three low major guys who should be complimentary pieces, and no players who should play leading roles, makes you feel like things are going well, good for you.

Have you seen where these same ranking have ranked Oweh? That should tell you how accurate they are.

Your post seems to contradict itself

It should tell you that people who cover basketball for a living and aren’t homers for one team might have a better idea of how players stack up than you do. Oweh was brutal for two months. He also was in a system that didn’t capitalize on his strengths and was playing for a coach who has shown zero ability to develop guys who have played multiple seasons for him in Norman. You had probably never heard of any of the guys we have signed until a few weeks ago. You almost certainly have never watched any of them play a game. Yet you seem confident they are better than our departing players. If that’s the case, I wonder why Houston and Kentucky weren’t interested in the four kids we signed.

In one way or another, I think NIL was a factor in each recruitment....except Godfrey.

Godfrey - honestly, I think he was always set on UGA. The question seemed to be more of a "does UGA have room/want him?" than anything else. His dad played there and Athens is maybe an hour away from his home. Was UGA's offer more than OU's? Who the heck knows. Probably pretty damn close. I haven't seen anything about UGA spending major bags (for MBB).

Scott - as we all know, was set to commit to OU....and then STJ increased their offer. I'm guessing $500-600K (bump for COL) while OU saw him in the $300K range. And it felt like OU said, "good luck". I don't blame them, if true. He's a decent player, not someone OU should have overspent on.

Pedulla - almost exclusively NIL. A kid who's value, based on numerous other known/rumored offers, is probably closer to $400-600K got $850K? I think we all can do the math here. That's not to say Beard isn't the better coach or any of that. But JMO, he would have picked OU if OU's offer was more than Ole Miss'.

Garrison - he committed to a program he didn't visit. He chose them over Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Three schools that were offering large amounts. My assumption is; Kentucky's offer is in the $1M range. It just seems logical. Last minute million dollar offer = commitment sight unseen.

Overton - simply put, it felt like OU had him slotted at a certain "cheap" number and Tech exceeded it with their offer. Not by a lot, maybe OU was at $250K and Tech gave him $350K?...he isn't/wasn't someone you'd get into a bidding war over.

Richmond - even though he's a NYC kid choosing to stay in NYC, I assume StJ's offer >> OU's. The OU visit might have been used to negotiate more. Not sure we'll know. $1M+? I wouldn't doubt it. Something happened in between his OU visit and today. It's like he left Norman knowing he'd be right back on StJ's campus (today). Likely: he got OU's offer, StJ is told the number, and StJ exceeds OU's number to a point where Richmond feels comfortable enough to commit quickly.
