Mile run times

Running the mile with basketball players might be the most pointless thing you can do. It does nothing for basketball and gives you zero indication of anything other than they can complete a mile run.

I don't know if it's completely pointless. I'll agree it doesn't really matter on the court. But it shows we've gotten better at conditioning every year the last 3 years if you look at the times. There's no way that's bad in any way.

Anything under 6 minutes is acceptable. It's all about testing your wind. Every sport has guys running a mile in under 6 minutes in the off season as long as I can remember.

How does it show they are in better shape? Because they can run one speed for a long time? If you take the guys and run sprints on the same track they are running the mile they would be hurting and you would see how they are not in shape just because they can run the mile in under 6 minutes.

I don't know about junior high girls but Jenks does have an 8th grade boy who ran the mile in 5:02 at the last cross country meet, haha.

The mile only teaches you to pace and run at a speed you won't on the court.
We have a kid who can run a 5:00 flat mile but when you run shorter distances with short rest time, he is usually in the back of the pack.

It is fine to use as a measuring stick for pretest and post test, otherwise it really is pointless.

I am willing to bet they only do this to get a time.

if it was pointless, they wouldn't time it. Even if it shows that they have been working out to get better, it still has a purpose.

This thread has the times of each year posted for the last 3 years. We are much better every year especially with the experienced guys. You can't say that's a bad thing.
