I was thinking the same thing. I understand the level of opposition wasn’t that great but I was impressed with those three guys!!
Yes, all three showed promise. And Kuath, too. We missed some shots we should have hit, but we hustled throughout and rebounded well. And the defense, even considering who we were playing, was pretty good, a few ragged stretches aside. Manek had a good night, with a few missed shots that will fall on most nights. McNeace was very impressive at times -- I think he's going to be more improved than some here predict. And Polla and Freeman showed some signs of progress, too, though I'm reserving judgement on them till we see them against better competition.
The big guys up front scored 49 points and grabbed 33 rebounds. Muni, Manek, Polla, Freeman, and Kur.
I didn't see the game, but not sure why you are so pumped about Calixte. Played more minutes than anyone on the team and had 2 points and 3 rebounds against the Fighting Gorillas of Pitt State. 0% from 3 and 20% from the field.
Kur had 6 points and 8 rebounds in 11 minutes, including 4 offensive rebounds. Didn't like what you saw from him?
I went to the game last night and had a few thoughts.
Calixte will be great for us. You can't see what he was doing last night in the box score. He is very quick and composed. Actually a better defender than what I was expecting.
Bieniemy is going to be a great player. He has such a smooth stroke. Not sure how I felt him wearing 24!
Miles is a competitor. He will be a good rotational player. I noticed he doesn't like to shoot from 3 much. There were a handful of times he hesitated when open and once he was open, he pump faked took two steps in to take a jumper.
Brady is making incredible strides. Teams are going to focus on stopping him. Will be interesting to see how he adapts. I love how quickly he shoots the ball. Catches it and doesn't bring it down in his motion. Freeman needs to learn from him. Freeman has the slowest shooting motion (he got blocked twice last night because of it)
Muni looks like he has put on weight. Looks confident. Also seems that he was worked on his free throws alot (specifically his form). He didn't have the hitch in his shooting motion as before.
Odomes will be odomes. We all know what he is good at and where he struggles.
The one guy who might take a step down from last year is James. He struggles to create his own shot because he can't create separation from defenders (his first step is slow). He was the largest benefactor from Trae last year. He got to sit on the wing/corner with his feet set, ready to pull the trigger. Hopefully Calixte can help create for him and hopefully manek and muni will draw more attention to open him up.
Just some random thoughts after watching the game last night. Honestly, I am really excited about this team. We have alot of mature, stronger and older guys. Which, goes such a long way.
I agree the defense looked agressive and athletic. We moved the ball very well on offense which was missing last year for obvious reasons. My only gripe... and hopefully it was just exhibition game testing... was having Polla, Freeman and Lazenby on the court at the same time for several minutes in both halves. i don't think any of them will play a ton of minutes in regular season but personally don't like them all 3 on the court at the same time. We'll see though. I'm intrigued at what this team could be if it falls in place though!
... but the whole team really needs to work on shooting the ball.
Miles reminds me of former Sooner, Jaison Williams.
