Neil Dougherty an OU new assistant coach?

I hope it's true.

Some may criticise his inability to be successful at TCU. Other than Tubbs, who has been successful there?

An assistant job is very different from a HC job anyway. He can focus on locating and recruiting talent and working with the current players without being the "face" of the program and handling all the BS that comes with that.

We already know Capel is a recruiting force (evaluating may need some work, but no question he has gotten his share of the kids he has wanted). Kids who come here come to play for Capel, not the assistants.

So what we need is a guy who knows basketball, can help kids mature, both on and off the court, and can help Jeff evaluate what players a really worth the recruiting effort. I think, given the short window we have to replace assistants, a guy like this is a grand slam. I mean, what do some people expect at this point? We could use as many guys like this as we can find.

he took a decent billy tubbs squad and completely ran it into the ground because he couldnt recruit the dallas area players... what to believe???

I am not sure who to believe but I would like to think it would be easier to recruit a kid to come play for OU than TCU so we might not be comparing apples to apples.

If true, I'd say this sounds like a good hire. Much better than I expected since he was on Roy's staff at KU.

If this is true Jeff has surpassed any expectations on a new coach and recruiting class i had in mind. way to go Jeff

Yeah it would be good "get", as Dougherty worked in good programs with good coaches before the TCU gig.

Billy did it with smoke and mirrors and Lee Nailon to win at TCU. Billy also got to coach in the SWC for a couple-three years....which gave him some priority as a major conference team in a pretty average quality conference. coaching at TCU or SMU is not what it was in the SWC....today's C-USA is second-tier. people covering major hoops are following UT, ATM, OU, OSU, etc.

Dougherty sounds like a good get. as others have said, hard to know the end-results but have to be impressed with Capel's activity since the crapstorm of the spring.
