New recruiting wish list (2-11-2011)

If Capel signed that class, he should be fired.

Put down a realistic class that you think Capel can sign this year, assuming he will sign 3 more players. Not the guys that OU has no chance at (and are committed to other schools) like you did in your latest recruiting post.

Whenever people talk about Cezar Guerrero or the Gonzaga kid, etc it never turns into this type of thing. Sure, if you think these guys just can't play, say that, but why would you place so much trust in confidence in Guerrero but not Colvin?
I guess the big difference between Guerrero and Colvin is the signs of actual recruitment going on. The staff has identified Cezar as a guy who at the very least can contribute down the road. If Capel has proven anything in his tenure he looks a lot of places for kids, he's an active recruiter. Especially since Colvin once played vs OU I'm sure he knows about him.

The biggest debate of mine against this post is the make up of this class is bad considering the team. It means we will graduate 8 players in 2013 year. We just brought in 9 players this year and look at how that is working out. Unless you recruit like Calipari at Kentucky anytime you lose that many kids you're looking at a 1-2 year drop off. Which means another 1-2 years of what we had this year and last.

It would be irresponsible of Capel to do that to a program as he's setting himself up to fail for 1-2 years unless he becomes Calipari lite. Junior college recruiting now a days is becoming more and more of a band aid. This isn't even 10 years ago where jucos can be the core of your program. Grab then when you have an need (like posts this year) but if we relay on them long term we will get burned.

To be honest, I forgot about Newell. He has rarely been seen, except for 30 seconds here or there. I also have a weird feeling that he will transfer for playing time.
I go back and forth on if he will transfer or not, I almost wonder if he might have enough of an old school mindset to wait a year or two as a back up and then get pt as an upperclassman. Don't really know to be honest just guesses on my part. I hope he stays, he has potential and could be a key contributor as a JR and SR. Him and Neal both are long term investments types.

Cezar
Jurrick
Save the ship

2011 is a weak class, 2012 is stronger. Unless a top tier transfer or another elite player becomes available it makes more sense to save it then hand out ships like candy. That or OU loses players to transfers. Assuming OU addresses the PG and post needs with the two above they don't need anymore players to sit on the bench.

PG: Blair/Guerrero
SG Pledger/Newell
SF Clark/Neal
PF Osby/Washington/Thompson
C Fitzgerald/Goff/Jurrick

Do we really need to tie up another ship for next season?
I think if Capel is to be a successful coach he can't be worried about getting fired next year and grabbing onto whatever he can get. He needs to plan for the future so he doesn't get stuck in a panic cycle and this stuff repeats every few years.

I'd take Colvin in a heartbeat if don't get Guerrero/Carter. Not that it matters, but he scored 11 against OU his freshman year at Iowa State.

I don't know a thing about this season's Juco class, but, I do know that for the last 20 years our program has made a good living off junior college talent.

If there is an area I feel that Capel has truly been lacking in, it's recruiting quality juco players.

Under Capel, Omar Leary and C.J. Washington are it in terms of guys that have contributed more than simply taking up a scholarship.

You need to bump that post. I dont remember my last recruiting post. I mean Jurick is at the top of my list. Cezar is next. Honestly, I would like Raney. Maybe Richardson or the juco guy Anderson. Like Sam said, maybe bank the ship.

I'd like to end up with Guerrero (or Carter), Raney (or Richardson) and Jurick (I guess). Have no idea of any other big man is out there we are looking at.

Have a feeling we will have more than three to give. Maybe as many as five.

Capel has also mentioned taking a transfer in his last three radio interviews. I think there might already be something in the works there. Maybe a former recruit of his who is disgruntled at another school.

OU is basically bringing in three jucos already. Add to more and like sam said, it wont work. We're looking at one juco guy who id not playing.

I know you are just speculating but explain your "as many as five" comment

colvin can't matriculate to a big 12 school without losing a year of eligibility.

doesn't matter, he's not a difference maker in the big 12.

Pretty sure he can play at a Big 12 school since he spent a year at a juco. Transfer rules only affect players who transfer directly from one D1 school to another.

Rivalshoops had a front page article on Sam Grooms today (point guard from Chipola JC). Apparently he's drawing interest from several major programs, including UNC and kansas (Oklahoma State is also looking). If OU does look at a juco point, he might be another option.

nope.

Could've sworn I'd seen it happen. Maybe it was in a different conference.

Here's the language of the Big 12 rule:

"a 4-2-4 transfer student-athlete who is in compliance with NCAA Bylaw 14.5.6 must complete one full academic year in residence before being eligible to compete in a sport and forfeit one season of competition unless, in sports other than football or basketball, the director of athletics of the conference member institution of initial enrollment consents in writing to the student-athlete's enrollment at the second conference member institution."

There's an exception there for football and basketball, apparently making the possibility of a waiver by the ADs not an option. In other sports a 4-2-4 can play without sacrificing a year if the AD agrees to it.

probably.

i think maybe the big east allows it? but i definitely don't know the rules at all the different conferences.
