Next coach needs to connect with fans >>> The Oklahoman

Damn you, stupid newsok.com auto-play videos

And he had a great example of that right next door with Sherri. She and her teams are always doing things in the community and trying to get fans in the seats. Maybe Capel did some of that, but I don't remember hearing about it. Maybe he just never really felt comfortable in Norman. Guess we will never know.

Next coach needs to win would also have been a reasonable title.

awwwww why didn't you say it was an opinion from HER?

Interesting that Carlson would bring up a disconnect with fans. It certainly didn't start out that way with Coach Capel. I remember a lengthy discussion about how he quickly embraced high school coaches in Oklahoma and Texas by accepting speaking engagements at group meetings, something his predecessor failed to do. He spent time going from town to town with the Sooner caravan and hosting basketball camps during the summer.

Did those things stop or did the news media ignore Capel's efforts and fail to give him his just due? I don't recall any pub about them, but never really thought about it until I read this article.

Maybe he just never mastered that 'good ole boy' schtick that so many coaches excel at.

:ez-laugh:

Capel doesn't impress me as the type who could even pretend that he was a "good ole' boy." His prim and proper Dukie background doesn't fit the mold. And maybe that's why he failed to connect with fans in Oklahoma.

whoever brings back this guy has my support

Funny thing is NEWSOK has a disconnect to Sooner basketball. I do feel that the next coach should do more to reach out to the state's basketball community.

Yea, i think it has a lot less to do about the coach and more to do with wins...

Even when we win we still struggle to keep that place packed consistently, so it isnt a surprise the attendance dropped significantly when we were losing...
