Interesting that Carlson would bring up a disconnect with fans. It certainly didn't start out that way with Coach Capel. I remember a lengthy discussion about how he quickly embraced high school coaches in Oklahoma and Texas by accepting speaking engagements at group meetings, something his predecessor failed to do. He spent time going from town to town with the Sooner caravan and hosting basketball camps during the summer.
Did those things stop or did the news media ignore Capel's efforts and fail to give him his just due? I don't recall any pub about them, but never really thought about it until I read this article.
Maybe he just never mastered that 'good ole boy' schtick that so many coaches excel at.
