NIL Strategy

Guys, settle down. No one is in here saying Moser is an amazing coach. But if we have to choose between a buyout or more NIL money Ill take NIL money for this year. Why change coaches and still not spend enough on the team?

Despite what another post around here says, it's not that easy.

Operations - This comes from an operating fund. This is funded by all things OU athletics. Things paid out of this would be Moser's salary and regular operating expenses.

Internal Revenue Sharing - This is a calculation. It's a set amount each year. OU determines how to allocate that amongst the sports they want to allocate it to. I'm guessing that allocation won't change much, year over year. It's not that much though. If it's what, $20-something million for the entire athletic department, and you figure football gets a big chunk, this is a small number.

Outside NIL - No University funds are used for this. Can't be. This is the stuff that goes thru the Clearinghouse. This is the part that NOBODY has good numbers on, because no school in their right mind is going to share those numbers. This is where the majority of the NIL is coming from, and thus OU does not really control other than potentially telling donors they need more money in those funds to be able to strike deals with players. But OU cannot fund it directly.

So no, the Porter buy-out money and the true outside NIL money are not one in the same.

Some of you all should take some accounting/finance classes. It's not an overly difficult topic, and some of you are missing the basics as it relates to accounting at NFP/Governmental organizations, and being able to read the financial statements that are available to everybody.
Are not buyouts usually paid by donors? That would most likely come from same pool as nil.

Because a good coach helps the program long term. Giving Moser more money this year won't because he will squander it, just like he has blown the two best rosters he ever had by failing to get either to the tourney.

Because we had a top 10 portal class and our shitty coach couldn’t get us in the tournament with it. Why give him more money to squander?

of course the issue is another terrible year makes it harder to get NIL for the new coach the following year ..

the only good thing is that he is not getting an extension .. (that we know of )

What kind of coach are we going to attract with no NIL budget? Not a good one.
This. Resources have to be in place to get a good coach that has options.

If we found a diamond in the rough, they would either fail...or they would succeed and somebody with resources would come along and poach them after a short run of success. And we're not going to succeed hiring diamond in the rough coaches every 3 years.

It is actually very easy to argue that.
You hire a good coach you will make up the buyout pretty quickly.
Ticket sales aren't going to come back under Moser.

The more I hear from Denny, the less I like the hire if this is his thought process
Yeah right. Hire the “right” coach. Hit the lottery. Lose every player from this year and start over. Tired of arguing this. He’s our coach so ACCEPT IT

Well we certainly aren’t going to succeed with the lump of coal we currently have.

Some large buyouts are. I think OU could buyout Moser without having to go that route. Certainly next year.

But if OU asked for a donor to pay it, it would have to be a donation to OU in a manner that let's OU use it for operations or this specific cause. That isn't NIL. OU doesn't control/house the NIL money. That is in collectives and paid directly by companies and such (if not the collectives).

the budget will go up with a new coach .. and more excitement ..
you know this how??? Apparently our AD disagrees and his opinion counts WAY more

I am in favor of a new coach. But something else to consider is you may have to pay the buyout to get a coach from another school. Again, most likely going to have to ask for donations.

I thought the nil was now running through the schools such that Nagy does for football. Maybe different donation pools, but still asking donors for money. They may want a new coach and donate to that instead of the nil fund.
