SoonerSports.com ... Up next, the Sooners play in their first true road game of the season, traveling to Madison to face Wisconsin on Saturday, Dec. 3, at noon CT on Big Ten Network. Saturday’s contest will mark the third-consecutive year the Sooners and Badgers have met in early-season play. Wisconsin Notes prior to Tuesday night's Syracuse game

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WISCONSIN

QUITE A DEBUT: Wisconsin begins its first full season under Greg Gard, who coached the final 23 games last season after the Dec. 15, 2015 retirement of Bo Ryan. Gard led the Badgers to wins in 11 of the final 13 regular-season games and a trip to the 2016 Sweet 16, winning the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award.

GANG'S ALL HERE: UW returns each of the top 9 scorers from last season. In fact, the Badgers bring back all but 20 minutes played (99.8%) and all but 6 points (99.7%).

TERRIFIC TRIO: Senior Nigel Hayes was named Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year as well as a consensus member of the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Fellow senior Bronson Koenig and sophomore Ethan Happ were also selected for the Preseason All-Big Ten team.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: Wisconsin has held all 7 of its opponents to season-low point totals. The Badgers are allowing just 59.6 ppg on the year and rank 6th in NCAA in defensive reb. pct. (79.6%).

CRASH THE BOARDS: The Badgers have out-rebounded 6 of their 7 opponents this season and own a +14.6 avg. margin on the glass. UW owns a 93 to 50 edge on the offensive glass, out-scoring opponents 86 to 41 in second-chance points.

THE HAPP-ENING: Sophomore Ethan Happ had an impressive 3-game run at the Maui Invitational, leading UW with 16.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.3 bpg and 2.7 spg to earn All-Tournament honors.

PROTECT THIS HOUSE: The Badgers have won 9 in a row at home. UW's .870 all-time win percentage (262-39) at the Kohl Center ranks 5th among all active arenas in the NCAA.

WINS RECORD: The Badgers' senior class has been a part of 93 wins already in their UW career, averaging 29.3 wins per season. The winningest class graduated in 2015 with a total of 115 victories.

"Oh and good luck winning at the Kohl Center.
In a league in which most of the home venues are tough,
Wisconsin's stands out as almost impenetrable." - ESPN.com

Capacity

The Kohl Center seats 17,230 for men's basketball, which includes courtside seating, and 17,142 for women's basketball. These figures include approximately 7,500 seats in the lower seating bowl and 4,500 in each of the two balconies. The unique design of the Kohl Center (with two overhanging balconies) guarantees that all fans will be close to the playing floor with excellent sight lines. The facility seats 15,237 for hockey, and between 15,000 and 17,000 for concerts.

Attendance Records

Owning one of the largest buildings in the conference, the Badgers have been fortunate to have a fan base that fills the Kohl Center on a regular basis. Heading into the 2013-14 season, the men's basketball team has led the Big Ten in attendance in nine of the last 11 years and finished among the top 10 nationally for 13 straight seasons. The basketball team had a streak of 143 consecutive sellouts (2003-11) snapped in 2011.

For hockey, the Kohl Center is the second largest on-campus rink in the nation (15,359). The only on-campus facility with a larger capacity is Value City Arena (17,500) in Columbus, Ohio. The building is the third-largest rink played in regularly by college hockey schools, behind Value City Arena and CenturyLink Center Omaha (16,680). Since moving to the Kohl Center, the Badgers have led the nation in attendance in 14 of the 15 seasons and never finished lower than third.

This is hard to believe, but I assume it speaks to some pretty weak non-con schedules over the years. I remember a win over Michigan State in the fall of 2003, but that game was at a "neutral" site.....The Palace of Auburn Hills.

BTW - After that Vegas win in 1989, our victorious locker room was visited by the heavyweight champion of the world, "Iron" Mike Tyson.

Some great memories there, 04.

I heard that stat (no non-conference wins on the road against ranked teams since 1989) from Toby Rowland on the radio. The road win at LSU seemed huge last season, but LSU was not ranked.

As 04 alluded to, I imagine the neutral-court factor comes into significant play in this stat.

The Wisconsin game looks like a “No-Lose” situation for the Sooners. Those that follow college basketball know how difficult it is to win at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The Badgers are a veteran team that returns their entire roster from a Sweet-16 run last season. If the Sooners can pull off the big upset, then they might catapult into the Top-25; where OU currently gets zero votes right now.

A true road game like this is likely going to be an eye-opening experience for some of the younger OU players. A packed house with 17,000 fans will be a new experience for some of the young guys. I hope they have fun and play well.

There might not be 17,000 there. I don't know how they do season tickets, but i imagine a large number of basketball ticket holder also have football tickets and could be on their way to Indy for the Big 10 Title game.

This is a role-reversal from '15.

Take our whipping but learn from it and be a much better team in March than December.

OU needs a great effort from every player. If so, then we should keep the score under 10

Great game to gauge the team's progress.

Getting exposed in certain areas is a good thing, that provides the opportunity for growth.

They'll be better for it, win or lose.

Yep. This is by far the best team they've played. Will be a good gauge.. Although I will admit I got my hopes up a little too high when I heard we beat Oregon in the scrimmage..

This game may be a shock to some of our newcomers. Going from playing in front of a few 100 fans in earlier games to 10,000+ at Wiscy will be intimidating. It will be fun to see how they respond to playing a good team in front of a large, hostile crowd.

I've been impressed with OU's defense. They're fast, aggressive, and athletic. That can keep a team in any game. Like in golf where they you drive for show, but putt for dough. Defensive intensity and maintaining composure will be keys for OU this Saturday.

Yup. not thinking it will be "pretty". I'd like for it to be close, under 15 honestly would be close to me.

I really like our young guys...in a yr or 2 we should be in strong. Youth is what it is now.
