Just like Jeff Capel, he will come to OU and look at it as a stepping stone job. He'll value east coast hype players over lunchpale midwest guys. He'll think he's too good for the media and he'll not reach out to the state like a Buzz Williams or Johnny Jones. He'll bring a bunch of east coast assistants who spend a majority of the recruiting budget going out east to recruit players and take vacations at the same time.

VCU's signees under Shaka Khan

Heath Houston - Georgia
Toby Veal - Florida (JUCO), Georgia (HS)
Juvonte Reddic - North Carolina (Oklahoma offered)
D.J. Haley - California
Reco McCarter - North Carolina
Rob Brandenburg - Ohio
Treveon Graham - Maryland
Briante Weber - Virginia

Looks almost excactly like Capel except he never recruited Ohio. Matter of fact, Veal and McCarter are Capel recruits.

I wouldn't want either but it looks like Smart is better than Capel.

Smart is from Wisconsin, so he's not really an east coast guy.

Didn't you post this in another thread? Does an unwritten rule exist that after you post in a thread you follow it up with a new thread about the same topic?

I agree with most of your logic. But if his team beats the jayhawks today, logic goes out the window and I'll jump on the emotional knee-jerk bandwagon pro Shaka crowd.

Will Shaka's team fold in the first half like BuzzBo's team did against UNC or will they be able to compete for an entire 20 minutes?

The notion that Capel looked at this job as a stepping stone is pure speculation and projection. The best way to use this or any job as a stepping stone job is to do a great job while you are employed there. Chaka Smart seems like, well a very smart coach and any discounting of him just seems really odd. I mean Buzz Williams' team got dry humped to death by NC the other day.

Let's see how this plays out. Who reciporcates our interest in them.

You could look at every coach in the nation and find a game were they folded in a half. You have no point.

it's always nice when people make sh!t up based on nothing.

here's an idea - watch how they play this damn game and see. win or lose watch how they play.

VCU stocks their coaching pond with Florida assistants (Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart). What's wrong with stocking our pond with VCU heads?

I was no Capel fan, but I don't think he valued East Coast players more than local ones. Blake Griffin, Willie Warren, Tommy Mason-Griffin, and Cade Davis were all from Oklahoma or Texas.

Ok, I didn't want to start a new thread about this, so I'll post it here:

Assuming Buzz is out of the picture, Shaka's the best guy we can realistically get.

Can he win in the tournament? Yes.
Can he win with inferior talent? Yes.
Would he be able to recruit better talent to OU? I bet he would.
Experience as an assistant under a great coach not named Krzyzewski? Check. And as Silli pointed out earlier, Anthony Grant (Shaka's predecessor) was also an assistant under Donavan, and he's doing well at Alabama.
Does his team have an identity/system? Yes.
Would this hire make our fans excited? If they watched his team in the tournament, yes.
Is his team forcing a hell of a lot of turnovers against Kansas right now? Yes.

I just have a feeling this guy would make us at least a top-6 team next year, and could establish us as That Team No One Likes To Play. The only thing working against him? The name on the front of his team's jersey. Which is the only connection between Shaka and Capel.

In my opinion, no one knows his ability to recruit players that can actually play. In this his second year, none (meaning zero) of his recruits start and the best stat line of a player he recruited is 5.2 ppg average.

If this is the best OU can do, I feel sorry for fan base which will continue to shrink.

then you havent read anything about him. he was lauded for his recruiting abilities at Dayton, Clemson, and Florida. Let's not just make assumptions about him, ok?
